G-A spikers in win over Comstock
Cutting down on errors was a key for the Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team in a 3-0 win over Comstock (25-11, 25-5, 25-11) August 25 at G-A High School.
G-A coach Jonica Klimp was pleased how her team played against the developing Colts, and the way her team controlled the court.
She said the coaching staff has placed an emphasis on avoiding giving away points with personal errors. Her team still thrived despite allowing Comstock to secure 20 of its 27 points via G-A mistakes.
“From start to finish, we learned how to control the court and the game,” observed the G-A coach.
Lily Gilbert had an overall strong game with 10 digs, nine kills and five aces, Emily Coleman had 10 digs, Lexi Coburn had 28 assists and Claire Callender added five aces.

JV football team wins season opener
The Galesburg-Augusta JV football team posted a 36-24 win over Saugatuck August 26 at Maskill Field in the season opener.
Kody Watson and Donaven Tiffany each had two touchdowns and Julien Houseman added one touchdown.
Kayden Bienz and Jaxson Kasten each ran in successful 2-point conversions.
G-A coach Les Brewer said the Ram rushing game enjoyed a very strong game and the Rams enjoyed one long pass play covering approximately 20 yards from Donnie Tiffany to Gabe Smith.
The G-A JVs currently have an open date September 10 but are scheduled to play at Comstock at 6 p.m.

Rams earn victory in season opener

The Galesburg-Augusta Rams won their season opener in thrilling fashion with a 24-23 come from behind win at Saugatuck.
The Rams trailed 14-0 before scoring their first touchdown on a 27 yard pass from Patrick Armock to Ronald Kasten with two minutes to play in the first half. Kasten passed to Giovanni Evans for the p.a.t. and the teams went into halftime with the Trailblazers holding a 14-8 lead.
The G-A defense stopped Saugatuck on its first possession of the second half starting their first drive of the second half on their own 20 yard line.
Three straight runs resulted in a first down at the G-A 38 yard line. Armock faked a hand off and rolled to his right. He connected with Evans along the sideline and Evans out raced the defender for a 62 yard score.
Evans added the points after on a run and the Rams had their first lead of the game mid-way through the third quarter.
Saugatuck responded driving down to the G-A 15 yard line but were stopped when Alex Krugh intercepted a Trailblazer pass giving the ball back to the Rams at their own 14 yard line.
A short run, incomplete pass and quarterback sack left the Rams with a fourth and eighteen at their own 6 yard line. The snap from center sailed high and the Trailblazers recovered the ball in the end zone for a safety that tied the game at 16 all.
After the ensuing free kick Saugatuck took possession at their 30 yard line.
Ten plays later Alek Diaz ran up the middle, broke a couple of tackles and raced 40 yards for a touchdown. Dante Holley added the point after kick and the Rams now trailed 23-16 with 6 minutes to play.
The Rams weren’t about to toss in the towel.
Starting at the G-A 27-yard line, Evans ran for 5 yards. Armock connected with Cayden Allie for 24 yards. Greg Buckner’s 26 yard run gave G-A a first down at the Saugatuck 13 yard line. Evans ran for 9 yards on a third and seven play giving the Rams a first down at the one.
Armock wasted little time as he plowed into the end zone narrowing the Trailblazers lead to 23-22. G-A called on Evans and he responded running in the game winning two point conversion and a 24-23 G-A lead with 2:07 to play in the game.
The Rams defense responded holding the Trailblazers to a short run followed by three incomplete passes and the come from behind win was complete.
For the game, the Rams rushing offense had trouble getting established. They finished the game with 84 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Buckner finished with 55 yards on 8 attempts. The passing game was a different story as Armock completed 12 of 20 passes for 223 yards. Allie caught 5 passes for 90 yards and Evans had 3 catches for 78 yards.
Defensively the Rams had their hands full as the Trailblazers rushed for 285 yards on 46 attempts but held them to just 1 completion of 6 attempts for 24 yards. The Rams held a 310-309 total offense edge over Saugatuck.
Colton Robertson led the G-A defense with 14 tackles. Dominic Corsi had 8 tackles. Ronald Kasten, Ayden Maine and Tristin Jackson each added 6 tackles.
