In honor of 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Michigan Community Service Commission provided funding to support 13 organizations to host volunteer opportunities that address community needs and will mobilize 3,000 volunteers to contribute 8,000 hours of service across the state and encourages Michiganders to find a volunteer opportunity near them.
“Serving others strengthens our communities and honors the lives lost and the heroes who stepped forward on 9/11,” said Michigan Community Service Commission Executive Director Ginna Holmes. “This day is about remembering the people we lost and their families along with choosing to make a real difference across our state. We hope Michiganders will feel inspired to volunteer and stand alongside local organizations in service.”
The Michigan Community Service Commission issued more than $8,000 in grants ranging from $100 to $1,000.
The grant recipients are:
• Community Health Awareness Group
• United Way of Genesee County
• Clark Park Coalition
• Northwest Community Schools
• Freedom House Detroit
• Macomb Foster Closet
• Community of Hearts
• St. Patrick Church
• Boys & Girls Club of Alpena
• The Children’s Center of Wayne Inc.
• United Way of Bay County
• Michigan State University
• United Way of the Lakeshore
One of the grant recipients, Community of Hearts in Grand Rapids, will be hosting a Mental Health Advocacy Program as its service project.
“On a day when our nation remembers both tremendous loss and extraordinary acts of compassion, we believe one of the most meaningful ways we can serve is by learning how to recognize when someone around us is struggling and knowing how to help. Mental health advocacy is community service,” Community of Hearts Founder Monica Sparks said.
The 9/11 National Day of Service projects are happening in communities across the state, and many are still seeking volunteers.
