A 23-year-old Zeeland man was critically injured Monday night in a two-vehicle crash on Byron Road at the eastbound Interstate 196 exit ramp in Zeeland Township.
Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office were called to the crash shortly after 10 p.m.
A preliminary investigation shows a Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by a 22-year-old Grand Rapids man, was pulling a trailer. The truck was exiting off I-196 and attempted to turn left onto westbound Byron Road when it was struck by an eastbound Porsche driven by the Zeeland man. The driver of the Porsche was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital in critical condition, Sgt. Chris Armstrong of the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The driver of the Silverado and three passengers, ranging in age from 16 to 36, fled the scene on foot following the crash. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office used a drone and a K9, as well as Holland Police Department's K9, to find and arrest the driver and passengers, Armstrong said.
The driver of the Silverado had minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. The other three passengers were checked out on scene for minor injuries but did not seek further medical treatment, Armstrong said.
Byron Road was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared of involved vehicles and debris.
This crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
