Varsity football team returns to win column
By Dale Martin
Leading 16-14 after one quarter, the Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team scored 24 second quarter points to take control of the game at Gobles. They added 26 second half points to gain their 7th win of the season, 58-26.
The Rams finish the regular season on October 23rd at home against Cassopolis (7-1), winners of its last seven games. A win would give G-A its first 8-1 regular season finish since 1990, when that team advanced all the way to the state finals and finished 11-2. The 1990 team finished the regular season 8-1.
G-A started the game with a 71 yard, 10-play drive with Patrick Armock scoring on a 5 yard run. Armock then passed to J.J. Bailey for the points after and an 8-0 lead.
Gobles answered with a 58 yard, 7-play drive with Maximus Sager scoring on a 5 yard run. The point after failed and G-A held a slim 8-6 advantage late in the quarter.
An onside kick by Gobles failed and the Rams started their second drive at the Tigers 45 yard line. Armock connected with Bailey on a 23 yard pass and six running plays later it was Ronald Kasten scoring on a 4 yard run. Giovanni Evans ran for the extra points, giving G-A a 16-6 lead early in the second quarter.
Gobles wasted little time driving 78 yards for its second score of the evening. Hunter Piper ran for 43 yards, an unsportsmanlike penalty gave the home team a first down at the Rams 9 yard line and Avery Greffe tossed a pass to Piper for a touchdown. The point after attempt was no good and the Ram lead was cut to 16-12.
G-A’s next possession was a disaster. Starting at their own 23 yard line the Rams attempted a double reverse but fumbled the ball losing 14 yards and forcing them to punt from their own 9 yard line. The snap from center sailed over the punter’s head resulting in a safety, narrowing the Ram lead to 16-14 half way through the second quarter.
Gobles returned the free kick to the Ram 48 yard line. On a third and 6 Greffe was hit trying to get a pass off and Robertson recovered the fumble at the Gobles 48 yard line. The Ram offense failed to take advantage of the situation giving the ball back to the Tigers at their own 46 yard line.
The G-A defense forced the Tigers into a third and 10 at the Rams 46 yard line. On an attempted end run Ronald Kasten stripped the ball from the runner and returned the ball to the Gobles 36 yard line.
Armock and Evans teamed up on a 27 yard pass giving the Rams a first down at the Tigers 9 yard line. Armock then raced around left end and into the end zone for a Ram score. Evans ran for the two point conversion and a 24-14 Ram lead with 1:07 to play in the half.
Gobles started its next possession at its own 45 yard line. On the second play J.J. Bailey intercepted a Greffe pass and returned it to the Gobles 45 yard line. Armock passed to Kasten for a 38 yard gain down to the Tigers 7 yard line. Two plays later Armock scored again on a 7 yard run. Buckner added the two point conversion on a run and the teams went into halftime with G-A leading 32-14.

He flipped the ball toward his intended receiver but Cayden Allie batted the ball in the air, intercepted it and returned it to the Tigers 7 yard line. Kasten picked up his second touchdown of the night on a 6 yard run. The two-point run attempt failed and the Ram lead was now 38-14 late in the third quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff the Tigers fumbled the ball with J.J. Bailey recovering the ball at the Gobles 34 yard line. On the first play of the fourth quarter Buckner picked up his second touchdown on a 26 yard run and with La Hard’s extra point kick, the Ram lead was expanded to 45-14.
