Varnum Announces Leadership Transition

The Varnum law firm recently announced the election of a new Chair and two new members to its Policy Committee, which serves as the primary governing body for the 165-member firm.

Dave Khorey, who has served on the Policy Committee for several years, was named Chair of the Committee and of the firm. Newly elected to the Committee are attorneys Rich Hewlett and Perrin Rynders.

Khorey succeeds Scott Huizenga, who served as Chair of the firm's Policy Committee since 2012. At that time, the Firm announced a new leadership structure that divided Managing Partner responsibilities between two roles: Chair of the Firm and its Policy Committee, responsible for firm strategy; and Executive Partner (a role that continues to be filled by Tom Kyros, one of Varnum's estate planning lawyers), responsible for policy implementation and firm administration. Huizenga agreed to accept the role of Chair for a three-year period.

“When we adopted the new management structure, our intention was to allow deeper representation of firm internal and external constituents while also ensuring a dedicated focus on key firm strategies,” Huizenga said. “I believe our record of accomplishment over the past few years demonstrates the effectiveness of the shared management structure.”

Varnum saw significant growth in 2015, opening a downtown Detroit office and adding 30 attorneys to its roster, including 10 in Southeast Michigan. The firm also opened an office in Ann Arbor, and acquired an office in Hastings through the addition of attorneys and professional staff from the former Law Weathers firm.

Khorey is a labor and employment attorney who provides advice and consulting on a number of sensitive and complex labor and employment matters. He is a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Attorneys and is widely recognized as a top labor and employment attorney by legal ranking organizations including Chambers USA, Martindale-Hubbell and Best Lawyers®.

Hewlett is a partner in the trial law group. A seasoned litigator, he has more than 25 years' experience in business and construction law, representing clients in construction disputes and complex commercial litigation matters.

Rynders is a successful trial attorney who has prosecuted and defended a wide variety of business and commercial disputes, ERISA cases, employment cases, product liability and personal injury cases, health care fraud and tax matters. In 2014 he was recognized by the Grand Rapids Business Journal as “Newsmaker of the Year” in law, based on outstanding success on behalf of his clients in high-profile litigation against Michigan's largest insurer.
