Ansel “Bud” Smith, founding partner in Smith Haughey Rice and Roegge -- The Passing of a Legacy


Smith Haughey Rice and Roegge is saddened to announce the passing of founding partner Ansel “Bud” Smith, Jr. on February 21, 2016. Born on March 20, 1915, Smith was one month shy of his 101st birthday.

In 1938, Smith partnered with Clifford A. Mitts and the law firm of Mitts & Smith was born, now recognized as Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge. Bud built a reputation for his practice in workers’ compensation. Bud Smith retired to Florida with his wife in 1985 but still remained involved within the firm on an Of Counsel basis.

Smith was educated at Harvard University and the University of Michigan where he received his law degree. As a civic leader throughout his career in Grand Rapids, Smith served as President of the United Fund and Community Services (United Way), the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, the Friends of Michigan Historical Collections (UofM), Kent Country Club and the University Club. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Bar Associations of Michigan and Grand Rapids and Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity as well as served as a Trustee on the Boards of the Michigan Foundation for the Arts, Grand Rapids Arts Council and the Kendall College of Art & Design.

Smith served two years in the Pacific Theatre as an officer in the Coast Guard, participating principally in the operations in the Solomon Islands, Marianna and Iwo Jima.

Ansel “Bud” Smith, Jr. led a distinguished 45-year career in Grand Rapids, Michigan and will be remembered as a man of class with a great sense of humor.
