Cambridge receives award for Outstanding Business Lawyer

James Cambridge, a member of Kerr Russell and Weber PLC in Detroit, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award by the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section. Cambridge, who practices in the areas of business law and finance, will be presented with the award at the Section's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. The Livonia resident served as chairperson of the Section from 1997-1998. Upon learning that he will be receiving the award, Cambridge said "I am honored to receive the Schulman Award. Professor Schulman's legacy is his teachings of service and professionalism. As lawyers, it is important that we follow these principles and lead by example." Cambridge served as the chairperson of the legislative drafting committee of business and tax lawyers who drafted the Michigan Limited Liability Company Act. He is a frequent lecturer on business topics and is the co-author of "Michigan Limited Liability Companies" and a contributor to "Advising Closely Held Businesses in Michigan", published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education at the University of Michigan. He is also a member of the Business Law Advisory Board for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Cambridge exemplifies professionalism and knowledge in the field of business law, having drafted the state of Michigan's initial LLC Act in 1993, said Lynne Chard, executive director of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (IC LE). He has been involved in every major amendment to it since then and also wrote a highly regarded, practical book on the Limited Liability Act in Michigan, she added. "Jim is generous with his time and expertise. His efforts have helped literally hundreds of fellow lawyers," Chard said. "He always makes time to help when asked--whether it's for ICLE's advisory board or in response to a fellow lawyer's request for LLC drafting or strategy advice. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award. " Michigan House of Representative Speaker Pro Tempore John Walsh (R-Livonia) is a member of the Business Law Section himself and a friend of Cambridge for the last 20 years. "He has proven again and again to be a consummate business attorney, a leader in our profession, and a thoughtful contributor to our community. His leadership on LLCs within the Bar, followed by his participation in drafting the enabling legislation, has contributed greatly to wise business development and growth in our state," Walsh said, calling Cambridge a "successful advocate for this clients, the Section, his community and Michigan." Cambridge is listed in the "Best Lawyers in America", "Chambers USA - Leading Lawyers for Business "and among "Michigan's Super Lawyers". The Outstanding Business Lawyer Award was named after Prof. Stephen Schulman, who taught several business law courses during a lengthy tenure at Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. Schulman received the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching and was chosen by the student body as the school's Professor of the Year several times. Schulman also was instrumental in the drafting of much of Michigan's corporate law that still is in place today. The Business Law Section established the Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award in 2006, to be presented annually. The award honors Michigan business lawyers who consistently exemplify the characteristics the Business Law Section seeks to foster and facilitate: the highest quality of professionalism, the highest quality of practice, and an unwavering dedication to service, ethical conduct, and collegiality within the practice of law. Past recipients of the Schulman Award include Cy Moscow, Martin Oetting, Hugh Makens and James Bruno in 2006; Charlie McCallum and Verne Hampton in 2007; G.
