Contractor in asbestos case gets tough sentence

BAY CITY (AP) — A contractor has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for failing to properly remove asbestos from an old church in Bay City.

The church was converted into a charter school, Bay City Academy. Roy Bradley Sr. was accused of failing to provide workers with appropriate gear. The government says dry asbestos fibers were released.

Bradley was sentenced last week in Bay City federal court, two days after he was convicted of a tax evasion conspiracy in a different case with charter school founder Steve Ingersoll.

Bradley’s attorney says the sentencing guidelines in the asbestos case were excessive. Mark Satawa had asked Judge Thomas Ludington to limit the prison term to no more than 24 months.
