MDHHS seeks applications for Rural Health Transformation Program Workforce for Wellness Initiative

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued grant funding opportunities (GFO) for the Rural Health Transformation (RHT) Program that will support the Workforce for Wellness Initiative.

Michigan’s RHT Program focuses on building a strong and innovative rural health system that ensures every resident has access to high-quality care close to home. The program advances this goal through coordinated, community-driven strategies implemented across four core initiatives:

Strengthening partnerships that support rural health transformation.

Expanding and stabilizing the workforce needed to sustain community wellness.

Advancing interoperability so providers can share information and coordinate care effectively.

Developing models that bring essential services closer to where people live.

The Workforce for Wellness Initiative is designed to strengthen Michigan’s rural health workforce and support the delivery of integrated care. Approximately $34,231,500 will be made available through five Workforce for Wellness funding opportunities that will support recruitment, retention and training across a broad range of health care professions. By investing in programs that incorporate proven best practices, the initiative will support professionals already serving rural communities while expanding the pipeline of qualified health care professionals.

The award period for these grant funding opportunities begins October 1, 2026, and ends September 30, 2027.

The available funding opportunities include:

Maternal Health Provider Training: $5,000,000.
University-Led Master of Social Work Award Program: $7,000,000.
Rural Health Provider, Recruitment, and Retention Program: $14,731,500.
Limited License Master of Social Work Supervision Stipend Program: $2,500,000.
