Charles A. (Charley) Lawler, Member, Clark Hill became President of the Ingham County Bar Association on July 1, to serve a one-year term.
He currently serves as Member-in-Charge of Clark Hill’s Lansing office, a position he has held since 2017.
A member of the firm’s litigation practice group, Lawler advises clients on the issues necessary to manage a business as well as in civil and commercial litigation proceedings including bankruptcy, real estate, creditors’ rights, property tax, and construction matters. He also advises his clients regarding municipal law issues, including the representation of county treasurers in tax collection and foreclosure disputes.
He has represented several treasurers in the Michigan Court of Appeals, Michigan Supreme Court, the United States District Courts, and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals relating to foreclosure issues, as well as several material suppliers and subcontractors in matters relating to the Michigan Construction Lien Act and the Michigan Builders Trust Fund Act.
Lawler holds both J.D. and B.A. degrees from Michigan State University.
In additional news, the State Bar of Michigan recognized Lawler for his extensive pro bono service over the past year.
By providing more than 30 hours of pro bono service to clients, Lawler has been named to State Bar’s Honor Roll.
“Given the challenges that many people faced throughout the past year, it only felt right to provide pro bono help as much as I could,” Lawler said. “I appreciate this recognition from the State Bar and congratulate the other honorees on their service.”
Lawler provided pro bono assistance with litigation cases involving oppressed tenants in landlord-tenant issues. He helped several tenants collect money from their landlords through district court judgments.
Lawler helps clients manage their business interests and in civil and commercial litigation proceedings inducing bankruptcy, real estate, creditor’s rights, property tax, and construction matters.
Prior to joining Clark Hill, Lawler was involved in private business as both an owner and manager where he gained personal experience in identifying and resolving legal issues facing business owners. His prior business ownership provides his client’s the opportunity to engage an attorney who has real first-hand business experience and intimately understands the challenges to growth that companies have. His business experience includes lease negotiations, human resource issues, marketing, product procurement, bank negotiations, managing litigation, community relations, insurance procurement, and other issues necessary to manage a business.
