Early Deficit Too Big For G-A To Make Up In Championship Game

A suffocating defense by Olivet frustrated the Galesburg-Augusta varsity basketball team most of the first half and the Rams never recovered in a 67-45 setback to Olivet (21-2) Nov. 19 in the championship game of the Class C District Tournament at Olivet.

Olivet, behind an effective full court press, held the Rams to just four points in each of the first two quarters for a 19-4 lead after one quarter and i comfortable 37-8 advantage at halftime.

G-A played a much better second half, outscoring Olivet 37-50, but could not make much of a dent in its large deficit. The Rams trailed by a 49-25 count at the end of three quarters.

Colleen Callen whipped in 20 points to pace the Rams, Lindsey Daniels chipped in with 13 points, Sally Nuyen and Jennifer Garrett each scored four points and Ellie Blake and Tara Adkins each scored two points. The Rams complete the season with a 5-17 record.

Telephone Lines Repaired

Work was completed last week to put into service the new permanent cable extending a mile south of the village and the new open wire lines continuing on the next mile. These new lines replace the plastic cables which were put up for temporary service after the existing lines were wrecked by the sleet storm last January.

This event marks another step in the progress of the Climax Citizen’s Telephone Company pro-gram to provide it’s customers with improved telephone service. 11 lines serving 95 customers are now completely rebuilt for these 2 miles and plans are to begin in the early spring to rebuild the next mile to the south.

The new cable was spliced by A. J. Lewis of Burr Oak, Michigan who is a retired Michigan Bell Telephone Co. cable splicer.
