Scotts Days celebrations to feature parade, garage sales, tractor show July 17-19

By Bruce Rolfe

While one noticeable feature that has been a part of previous Scotts Days celebrations will not be included in this year’s event, most of the same activities will be during the big weekend celebration July 17-19.

The Village-wide Yard Sales are held July 17-19, with times and dates varying at each location.

The Scotts parade, sponsored by the Pride of Scotts, will take place July 18 at 10:30 a.m.

Thge parade lineup at Perkins Tire and the Scotts Elementary School begins at 9 a.m.

The Scotts Olde Tyme Power & Equipment Association’s tractor show is set for July 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m.

Pride of Scotts President King Perkins said because participation numbers for a car show, vendors and other activities that took place at the Pride of Scotts following the parade have decreased, the group decided not to hold any events at the Community Center following the parade. Instead, most of the activities will be taking place at Scotts Mill County Park where the tractor show will be held July 17 and 18.

“That kind of died so we joined together with the tractor club and will try to get everybody to move it to one spot and work together,” explained Perkins, who said the Tuesday Jammin Session group will be selling popcorn in front of the Scotts Community Center before and during the parade.

Perkins expects many tractors, fire trucks, old cars and some floats will be in the parade.

“It’s going to be what it was last year but I think it’s just going to continue to grow at a small pace. I think we’ve built something very good and I think it’s going to continue to stay where it is and grow a little bit every year,” said Perkins.

The Summer Heritage Tractor Show brings history to life with working demonstrations of antique farm equipment that powered American agriculture for generations.

Besides tractor displays, Perkins said saw mill, wood working, black smith, and wheat threshing demonstrations will be taking place during the old tractor show.

A food wagon, vendors, and a kiddie train will also be a part of the show.

A bake sale, that used to be held at the Community Center, will be held in conjunction with the tractor show.

The featured tractor at this year’s show will be Allis Chalmers.

Admission to the tractor show is $5 a car load or a County Parks pass. Parade participants will be admitted free after the parade Saturday.

Perkins said a spike in donations and sponsors has helped make the tractor show possible. He said the tractor show is drawing more visitors and participants.

Perkins said sponsorships and donations help pay for a liability insurance premium the group has to take out each year for the event, a kitchen license that allows the group to sell food, upgrades and maintenance to help keep equipment operating for demonstrations, fuel to operate equipment for the demonstrations, and funding to pay for crops that are planted for demonstrations.

The donations and sponsorships helped pay for a new food and concessions trailer expected to be ready for the tractor show.

“We’re getting to a point where we’re having to repair the buildings. That’s expensive,” said Scotts Power and Equipment Association President John Snyder, noting another expense sponsorships and donations help pay for.

Sponsors and donors so far include:

Stienbarger Spraying, 7 Blades Lawn Care, Wolverine Gas and Oil, Perkins Tire, W.T. Forestry, Lewis C. Howard and Trucking Warehousing, AIS, Bailey Excavating, ESCAPE Fire, Hemel Chevrolet of Colon, Scott Maker Fabrication, Yesh Metals, Carleton Equipment, and Kings Equipment.

“We put a lot of time into it but we’ve had a lot of community support,” adds Perkins, who said the County Parks Department has worked well with the group.

“We’ve got a good group. All of the pieces are falling into place with the local sponsorships and donations of money. It’s making it easier on us. We’re not scraping for pennies to make things work. If we need this, we’ve got the money for it. Let’s make the show better and bigger,” continued the Pride of Scotts president.

Snyder and Perkins said the group welcomes volunteers for the event. For more information on the tractor show or to volunteer, contact Perkins at 269-779-1305 or Snyder at 269-207-4728.
