State chief justice plans to leave court
“Leading our state’s highest court has been an opportunity to continue a proud record of independence, fairness, and commitment to the rule of law,” Clement said in a written statement.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will appoint a new justice. Clement is leaving with nearly two years left in her term.
Clement said she plans “to continue working to find ways to bring people together, to put data to work, and to make a difference in the lives of people so that interactions with our justice system result in safer communities and stronger families.”
Clement was appointed to the top court in November 2017 and elected to a full term in the 2018 general election.
In late 2022, she was chosen unanimously by her colleagues to serve as chief justice and was re-elected twice to serve in that post.
