Holbrook Lecture to feature musician, activist March 19
The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will present the 7th Annual 2024 Dewitt C. Holbrook Lecture on Social Justice on Wednesday, March 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Detroit Mercy Law atrium, 651 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.
This lecture series, made possible through a grant from the Dewitt C. Holbrook Memorial Trust, provides prominent leaders in the legal profession a forum to address issues on law and policy related to social justice. This year’s lecture is presented by Simon Tam and co-sponsored by the Arts, Communication, Entertainment & Sports Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
Simon?Tam is an author, musician, activist, and self-proclaimed troublemaker. He is best known as the founder and bassist of The Slants, the Asian American dance rock and anti-racist band that won a landmark case at the U.S Supreme Court in 2017 to help expand civil liberties for marginalized groups. He is also a co-founder of The Slants Foundation,?a nonprofit organization that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible for arts, activism, and civic engagement. Tam and Joe X. Jiang (The Slants) will deliver a presentation of storytelling and songs about Matal v. Tam.
Immediately following the lecture, a reception will take place. Parking is available in the Detroit Mercy Law Student Lot located off Larned St.

‘Cross Examination: Techniques and Strategies’ presented online
The State Appellate Defender Office and the Criminal Defense Resource Center will present a webinar on “Cross Examination: Techniques and Strategies” Tuesday, March 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
In this training, attendees will learn different cross examination techniques, when to use them, and how to form cross-examination questions. This training will give attendees the tools they need for cross examination during preliminary examinations, evidentiary hearings, and trial. Lauren Askew will be the featured speaker for the webinar.
Askew is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She has been practicing law since 2015. Currently, Askew is an assistant public defender at the Calhoun County Public Defender’s Office where she handles mostly felony and misdemeanor cases. Askew has been teaching trial skills since 2020 with the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) and Blanchard Law. She is a CDAM board member.
