While it’s been only a week since the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team was celebrating a trip to the Division 4 Team State Finals championship match the team lost 45-25 to Hudson, eight members of the team will be trying for individual honors at the Division 4 Individual State Finals at Ford Field February 28-March 1.
Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. with the 106-pound weight class. The top eight finishers earn all-state medals.
C-S seniors Logan Gilbert (120-pound weight class), Cole Reitz (132), Jackson Bagwell (157) and Sam Bleeker (215) and Martin seniors Jayce Ritchie (138) and Jakub Tomyslak (165) along with Martin junior Haylen Buell (144) and Martin freshman Urijah Joostberns (113) each qualified for the individual state finals with top four finishes at the individual regionals.
Gilbert enters the Individual State Finals with a chance to set the school record for career wins. With his three wins at the Division 4 Team State Finals last weekend, Gilbert has 187 career wins (187-20), one short of the school record for career wins set by Jordan Tutt (188-37) in 2019.
“That would be a cherry on top, for the career. It’s been a fun ride. To know I will be able to be in the bunch of one of the top wrestlers is pretty special. It’s pretty amazing to think about it,” said Logan.
Gilbert is a four time conference champion (3 times at the 106-pound weight class and once at 120 pounds), four time district champion (3 times at 106 pounds and once at 120 pounds), four time regional champion (3 times at 106 pounds and one at 120 pounds), and a three time state finals qualifier including two times he was state champion at 106 pounds his freshman and junior years and a runner up his sophomore year at 106 pounds.
The C-S senior will be the No. 1 seed in his opening round bracket, facing Beaverton junior Eric Larson. Gilbert will bring a 40-5 record into the meet while Larson, the No. 4 seed, will start with a 26-17 record.
Joostberns, who placed second at the regionals, will be the No. 2 seed in his opening round bracket, facing Capac senior Tyler McKenney, the No. 3 seed. Joostberns will bring a 29-11 record into the finals while McKenney sports a 41-11 record.
Reitz, who placed third at the regionals to qualify for the state finals, will face Lakeview senior Cameron Perez. Reitz will be the No. 3 seed in the opening round bracket with a 33-13 record, while Perez, the No. 2 seed, has a 46-6 record.
Ritchie will be the No. 3 seed in his opening round bracket, facing No. 2 seed Robert Dickie a senior from Vassar. Ritchie sports a 40-14 record while Dickie is 38-7.
Buell, the No. 1 seed in the opening round bracket, will face Glen Lake sophomore Abraham Feeney. Buell, who earned his 150th career win in his 16-2 win over Hudson’s Owen Loop in the team state finals match, begins play with a 50-4 record. Feeney, the No. 4 seed, enters the competition with a 22-10 record.
Bagwell, the No. 2 seed in his opening round bracket, will face No. 3 seed Jacob Pickford, a Hudson senior. Bagwell enters the tournament coming off three wins in the team state finals tournament. He will enter the individual state finals with a 37-16 record. Pickford, the No. 3 seed, has a 42-10 record.
Tomyslak will bring a 39-18 record into the tournament as the No. 4 seed, facing Hudson junior Devon Brigman. Brigman, who defeated Tomyslak by a technical fall 15-1 in the team state finals championship match, will be the No. 1 seed in the opening round bracket with a 31-20 record.
Bleeker will enter the individual state finals as the No. 2 seed in his opening round bracket and will face No. 3 seed, Gabriel Richard junior Anthony Emelue. Bleeker will bring a 39-14 record into the individual state finals after going 3-0 in the team state finals while Emelue sports a 34-11 record.
