Outrageously funny circumstances, characters, and dialogue take the stage at Athens Community Theater’s three performances of “Drinking Habits” April 25-27 at The Quonset Hut Theater, 132 N. Capital Avenue in downtown Athens.
This full-length Tom Smith comedy, brought to the local stage through special arrangements with Playscripts, Inc., is a farce where accusations, mistaken identities, and romance run wild on the stage. Two nuns of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but two reporters are hot on their trail.
After winning the Robert J. Pickering Award for Playwriting Excellence, “Drinking Habits” premiered on February 19, 2004 at Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, where it was directed by J.R. Colbeck and performed by members of Coldwater Community Theatre.
According to Director Brad Kenyon, the comedy is relentless. “It’s a very funny script that involves very funny situations,” he said. “The play is a good antidote for the winter blues. We’re welcoming spring with laughter.”
Quonset Hut founder Mark Doubleday found the script and three pages into it, Kenyon already knew Athens Community Theater simply had to stage it. Kenyon credits his largely seasoned cast for quickly understanding and having their respective characters down early in the rehearsal process. Quonset stage newcomers Victoria “Torie” Banks and Lynn Amari add new dimensions to the performance.
“Lynn may be new to our stage, but she’s been all over the Battle Creek theater scene,” said Kenyon. “Torie has great comedic timing that’s reminiscent of Carol Burnett.” Quonset Hut veteran Shannon Kenyon will amaze audiences with his versatility and the remaining cast members are primed to deliver solid, highly believable performances no matter how warped the script’s multiple twists and turns.
The full cast of “Drinking Habits” includes Lynn Amari as Sister Philamena; Kati Woodward as Sister Augusta; Noble Vater as George; Annette Kukla as Mother Superior; Shannon Kenyon as Paul; Torie Banks as Sally; Nevaeh Enlow as Sister Mary Catherine; and David Vater as Father Chenille. Tabitha Deeren is serving as understudy.
Woodward also doubles as costumer for the production, while Linda Kenyon heads up make-up; Roseanne Kenyon is stage manager; Nick Enlow is the tech director and builder of the set with the assistance of Noble Vater and local high school students.
“Drinking Habits” performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, with 4 p.m. matinees on both Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27. Admission is $10 per person at the door. “Popcorn Lady” Sarah Jordan-Grubb will be on-hand with multiple flavors of popcorn and other concessions to enhance the theater experience. Anyone with questions may call 269-729-5278.
