Virtual 2025 ADR Spring Series continues May 15
The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Michigan will continue its Virtual 2025 ADR Spring Series with a look at “IMPASSE” online Thursday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Speaking at the online program will be Peter Robinson, Professor Emeritus Straus, Caruso School of Law, Pepperdine. This half day program will provide opportunities to discuss the following concepts and techniques that affect our outlook and execution of IMPASSE:
• Defining mediator success
• The tension between neutrality and fairness
• Informed decision making as to process and outcome
• Assessing the extent a settlement proposal meets enough of their underlying interests
• BATNA/WATNA/MLANTA
• Gerry Williams’s research documenting Attorney Overconfidence and the mediator’s role as Agent/Angel of reality: confronting after having been empathetic
• Loss aversion and Golann’s suggestion of mediators as grief counselors
• Emphasizing costs and risks including net to client analysis to motivate plaintiffs and Randy Kiser’s research to motivate defendants
• Ethical issues when using the hypothetical offer and the negotiated mediator’s proposal techniques
• Brackets.

‘Inns of Court Annual Year-End Celebration’ hosted in Ferndale May 14
The Oakland County Bar Association will host its “Inns of Court Annual Year-End Celebration” on Wednesday, May 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Belle’s Lounge by Valentine Distilling Co., 161 Vester Ave. in Ferndale.
The OCBA Inn chapter will meet to celebrate the conclusion of another successful season. Attendees will enjoy a strolling reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar while networking with members of all of the teams as well as interested and former members. This event is open to anyone.
At the Inns of Court monthly meetings, members are able to build and strengthen professional relationships, discuss fundamental concerns about professionalism and the pressing legal issues of the day.
Cost for the celebration is $70 for judges, emeritus, masters, barristers, alumni, guests; $50 for associates and law students not on Inns team. Law students participating on Inns team may attend for free.
