The Climax-Scotts High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Karla Reichert, will have some extra work to do on Memorial Day, but the group is looking forward to it.
Besides playing in the Memorial Day parade and at a wreath laying ceremony following the parade, eight Jazz Band members will be putting on a performance at 12:30 p.m. at the C-S Football Field.
C-S Band Director Karla Reichert said she was approached by Memorial Day event organizer Julie Tiller about having the Jazz Band perform as part of the holiday lineup. Reichert discussed the idea with the Jazz Band members, and she said “they were really into the idea right away.”
“Just the idea of being able to play more of their songs, They learn songs really quickly. So we often learn more music than they’re able to perform at a concert unless the concert is really, really long. This is just another opportunity for them to get to play some songs that they’ve learned that they didn’t get to put in the concert this year,” explained Reichert.
Having the opportunity to put on another performance at the end of the school year allows Reichert to see how much growth has taken place.
“Some of the kids have just joined jazz band this year. It’s also the culmination of everything they’ve learned this year. It’s also some really fun music that they get to play,” said the C-S band director.
Reichert said the Memorial Day performance will also allow the Jazz Band an opportunity to play pieces they enjoyed playing previously.
She said one song the Jazz Band is especially looking forward to playing at the Memorial Day performance is “Bare Necessities”.
“A few songs they’ve played in years past that they know we’re not going to put on at a concert because we’ve already played them at concerts in the last couple of years. They’re like, oh we loved this song. Can we play it Memorial Day? So we’re going to play some songs that they really, really love,” said the C-S band director.
Since the band already marches in the Memorial Day parade and performs at the wreath laying ceremony after the parade, Reichert wondered it the jazz band members would want to perform later in the day on a holiday. “They said we’re going to be here for the parade, we might as well stay and do that performance too. They were the ones who were really interested in it too,” said Reichert.
Besides the eight performers in the Jazz Band, C-S graduate Jordan Roberts and some of the Drum and Bugle Corps group he plays with that will be performing at noon Memorial Day, are expected to join in so a full brass sound will be enjoyed.
Reichert said there will be approximately 25 band members marching in the parade.
Reichert emphasized having Roberts perform at C-S with the Drum and Bugle Corps band offers insight to students there are options to continue to play music after high school.
The C-S band director also hopes the Drum and Bugle Corps will be available to join the C-S band performing the National Anthem at the wreath laying ceremony.
“I’m excited to hear them (Northern Lights Drum and Bugle Corps) play and I’m excited to hear them bring their songs to the parade,” said Reichert, who is in her sixth year as band director at C-S.
