Interviews for DPW position begin soon

By Bruce Rolfe

The Climax Village Council hopes to consider a recommendation for a new full time Department of Public Works employee at the July 15 Village Council meeting.

DPW Manager T.J. Gibson said he and Village Council Administration Chairperson Denise Pyle along with the Administration Committee reviewed eight applications for the full time position. Five candidates were expected to be interviewed. Gibson said the interviews were scheduled to take place July 7 and July 8.

Full time DPW employee Forrest Cope’s final day is July 24. He is pursuing another career opportunity.

Water Availability Will Be Limited August 18-22

The water tower cleaning and inspection process will be performed August 18-22. There will be a limited amount of water available, so residents are asked to reduce water usage during that period of time.

DPW Manager T.J. Gibson said the bulk of the work will be performed August 18 and 19, however the water tank will have to be drained and chlorinated. He said hopefully the water tower will be running normally by August 23 or 24.

The DPW Manager said two fire hydrants in the village were replaced. He said the DPW will install a one foot riser on a hydrant on west Maple Street.

Gibson said he has been informed by MDOT the Village should learn by the end of August or early September if a grant the Village applied for has been awarded.

If the grant is awarded, the Village will perform road improvements on all of Maple Circle, Prairie Drive, Prairie Place Street and Water Way. If approved, the work would take place in 2026 for a total cost of $93,750. MDOT will pay for half and the Village will pay for half ($46,875). The work will be performed by Lakeland Asphalt.

 Fiber To Cell Tower Approved

The Council unanimously approved a request by Everstream Fiber to run fiber to a cell tower located at 119 Telecom Drive, with one stipulation.

Everstream Fiber, which currently has fiber equipment on the Village’s water tower, would like to extend the fiber to the old CTS tower behind the Post Office.

Village Council President Bill Lewis said the company provided a plan that explains the route to the tower. The Council approved the motion to confirm the company can use the Metro Act to work with the DPW and Council to approve the route.

The Metro Act allows the company right of way for telecommunication permits within the Village, which a previous Council approved Jan. 15, 2023 and Everstream signed Jan. 17, 2023.

Lewis said the company will work with the DPW to determine where village water lines near the proposed route are.

The company anticipates installing concrete covers called hand holes. The Council’s approved motion requires any of the concrete covers that are placed in the asphalt or road are street rated for weight.

Risk Management Options For Parade, Other Events Reviewed

Public Safety/Fire/Law Enforcement/Disaster Planning Chairman Nick Ludwig and Council President Bill Lewis reviewed risk management options other municipalities use to reduce liability for parades and other events.

Ludwig spoke with the village of Vicksburg and Village of Schoolcraft.

He learned food trucks are required to have a permit and proof of insurance.

Both municipalities require a form be filled out for float entries prior to entering the parade, providing a description of the vehicle pulling the float and a description of the float.

The two council members also learned other municipalities have a separate parade committee that coordinates the parade. There is also a judge panel for floats or other categories.

Lewis said the municipalities he visited with also have a parade policy.

The Council president adds most municipalities request notification of a parade or event within 60 days of the event.

Lewis adds for a parade in other municipalities, a municipal representative meets with the parade coordinator to establish rules, the parade route and estimated time the parade will last. The Village Council will determine what streets will be blocked off during a parade or event.

Lewis said the options were for information purposes only and the Council can establish its own policy.
