Friday night under the lights excitement begins at C-S, G-A next week

There’s a unique feeling in the air when the high school football season begins.

New dreams emerge, new memories are created and new friendships are formed.

The anticipation for the new season that begins next week for both the Climax-Scotts and Galesburg-Augusta football teams started weeks ago when summer workouts and camps began followed by the first day of practice August 11.

Friday night under the lights will begin on Thursday this year for both schools.

Climax-Scotts will begin the new season Thursday, August 28, with a game at Gobles at 7 p.m.

G-A will also begin the new season on the road, Thursday, August 28, at Cassopolis at 7 p.m.

While starting the season on the road doesn’t bring the same energy for the community as it would for a home opener, C-S coach Tyler Langs said there can be some advantages.

“Sometimes, it’s almost  better with a young team like this, to go on the road to start off. You might as well go right into the fire, right away. Feel uncomfortable,
get on a bus, something we’re not used to doing. And then you have to go play a really, really good team at Gobles. I think it’s a great way to break in a new team and the new kids and a bunch of young sophomores. It’s always exciting. Like we tell the kids, for us, the process starts two, three, four years ago. When you’re in the weight room all year around. When you’re training all year around. So this is just kind of you finally get to go out there and hit somebody. It will be fun, that’s for sure,” said Langs.

While communities are excited about one date that represents the first game of a new season, G-A coach Chuck Hadley feels the first game of the season is a culmination of a year’s worth of work.

“The  kids have been lifting, running, going to 7 on 7, summer camps and two-a-days all in preparation for this moment. We are only guaranteed 9 chances to suit up as a team and go out on the field and compete. I challenge our kids to not waste a minute of that time. The season will be over in a blink of an eye, but you have the chance to make memories that you’ll have with you for the rest of your lives.”

After two weeks of preseason practices and a scrimmage (C-S played Holton and Concord at Concord August 21 at 6:30 p.m. G-A played a scrimmage Thursday, August 21, at Union City with the host school, Quincy, Schoolcraft, Parchment and Vandercook Lake participating, beginning with the JV at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.), players are getting the itch to compete for real, even if the season opener is on the road.

“We’ve got a new team. I’m very excited. I get a very exciting feeling in my stomach when I play football, so I’m glad we’re away. Set the tone on their own field, bring it to their own house. I love playing teams on their home openers. It’s so awesome. It’s amazing. They think they’re going to come in and do everything. I’m really excited for that first week. We’ve never played Gobles since I’ve been here. I’m really excited to see what they’re like,” said C-S senior Hunter LaSala, who will play as a tight end and defensive end.

While the focus next week will be on the season opener, G-A is gearing up for a very special night Friday, September 5, at 7 p.m. when the former G-A long time legendary and Hall of Fame coach Bill Maskill statue will be unveiled in a special ceremony at 6 p.m. before G-A plays Plainwell.

G-A Athletic Director Mike Woodard said players who played for Coach Maskill will be recognized by the decade they played for the coach in between the 1st and 2nd quarters.

Hadley said that night will be special for his team, but the focus has been entirely on being prepared for Cassopolis in the first game of the season.

“When week number 2 gets here, we will make sure the kids understand the significance of Coach Maskill to this community and what a great privilege it is to play on the night the field is dedicated to him and his statue is unveiled. We hope to have some former players of Coach Maskill come to practice that week and address the  team to further highlight the significance of the night,” said the Ram varsity football coach.

After a road game in week number 2 at Potterville September 5 at 7 p.m., C-S will open the home portion of the schedule September 12 at 7 p.m. against Adrian Lenawee Christian.
