Panthers feel focus will be important
starting at Bellevue October 10

By Bruce Rolfe

While the Climax-Scotts varsity football team has enjoyed wide-margin victories the last three weeks, Panther coach Tyler Langs was quick to emphasize following a 59-6 win over Athens October 3 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School on senior-parent night, the games will likely be closer the rest of the season so the need to lock in mentally will be important.

“It’s hard when it’s 59-6 to stay locked in but we try to emphasize, do your job right. So it doesn’t matter what the score is, who you’re playing, home or away. We would like to have that same mentality so  when it becomes a close game we’re still doing our job. The next three weeks we’ve got to be amped up. Away games, Bellevue, Mendon and Pittsford. Some tough ones and hopefully in the playoffs. It will be fun,” said Langs.

C-S senior Hunter LaSala agrees with his coach and feels the three straight wide-margin wins has reduced some focus.

“I think we’ve all had our way of getting unfocused. I think everyone’s definitely lost focus these last three weeks. We’re not locked in as we were playing away in the first two (games).
I think it’s going to take a lot of hours at practice. I think these next two weeks preparing for Bellevue and Mendon, is going to prepare us. We’re going to get locked in. Every day’s just going to be quiet and locked in, and I think that’s how we need do it,” said LaSala.

LaSala feels reducing mistakes to a minimum against Bellevue will be especially important entering what will likely be a battle for the SCAA West Division title October 17 at Mendon.

“No mistakes. We’ve all got to be locked in. There’s no excuses. We’ve all got to be locked in. I think we’ll all do our best out there. If you make a mistake, that’s not acceptable, especially being this close (to Mendon in the standings). We’ve got to stay locked in and we’ll be perfect,” adds LaSala.

Langs was especially pleased how hard his team played each play despite having a large lead most of the game.

“And it didn’t matter who we put in. We rotated some kids in. I thought some of our kids that don’t get a ton of reps, played really, really hard. That’s all you can ask for, no matter
who’s in there, freshmen to senior. They’re playing hard for you and doing the right things,” observed the C-S coach.

C-S, winners of its last five games, moves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win over Athens while the Indians drop to 0-6.

The Panthers will travel to Bellevue, (3-3), 66-12 losers to Mendon last Friday, October 10 ahead of a key showdown at Mendon October 17.

A 66 yard touchdown run by Elijah Bowron at the 10:08 mark followed by a successful two-point run by Colton Selby got C-S off and running against Athens.

The Panthers struck often and quick following Bowron’s touchdown.

Three touchdowns over the next 4:47 gave C-S a 29-0 lead with 5:21 still remaining in the first quarter.

A 70-yard touchdown run by Liam LaSala with 7:28 left in the first quarter (LaSala kicked the extra point), a Dane Sattler interception he returned 28 yards for a touchdown 15 seconds later (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point), and a Maddox Wyman touchdown strike to Hunter LaSala covering 74 yards with 5:21 left in the opening quarter (Liam LaSala kicked the
extra point) accounted for the offense in the blitzkrieg.

A bad snap from the Athens 2-yard line over the quarterback’s head in the endzone gave C-S a  safety and a 31-0 lead with 3:40 left.

A nine-yard touchdown run by Liam LaSala with 3:53 left (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point) and a Alexander Wurtzel to Mason Shannon touchdown pass play covering 44 yards (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point) with no time on the clock sent C-S into the second quarter with a commanding 45-0 lead.

A Maddox Wyman interception he returned approximately 20 yards to the Athens 36-yard line with 8:57 left in the third quarter set up C-S’ next score.

Liam LaSala found a nice hole created by the offensive line and raced 28 yards for a touchdown with 7:20 left in the frame and a 51-0 C-S lead. Liam LaSala’s extra point kick sent C-S into halftime with a 52-0 lead.

With a running clock the entire second half, C-S scored its final touchdown 2:30 into the third frame.

Maddox Wyman found a big opening and ran 48 yards before getting tackled one yard short of the goal line. Demarion Taylor finished the drive with a one yard touchdown run with 9:30 left in the third quarter. Liam LaSala kicked the extra point for a 59-0 lead.

Athens, which scored its first 14 points of the season in a 42-14 loss to Bellevue last week, scored on a fumble recovery and 59-yard touchdown return by Greyson Moulds with 3:00 left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, establishing the final score of 59-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Liam LaSala rushed for 134 yards on six carries and was 7-for-7 on extra point kicks.

Elijah Bowron churned out 86 yards on four carries.

Wyman carried the ball three times and picked up 65 yards. He was 1-for-1 passing for 74 yards.

Middle linebacker Dane Sattler had seven tackles including three solo tackles and one interception.

C-S finished with 477 yards in total offense, with 359 yards coming on the ground.

Athens was held to 103 yards in total offense, including 56 yards on the ground and 47 yards passing.
