Attorney General Dana Nessel said a post from Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II saying there are “enough lawyers in the Democratic Party” was insulting to Democratic attorney generals across the country.

In the post on X, Gilchrist attached a video saying he was frustrated with Democrats that are “beholden straight up to corporate interests” and “to millionaire and billionaire donors.”

“You have too many Democrats who are scared to have a fight about anything important,” Gilchrist said in the video. “That’s why people have been not just frustrated but have been making other choices. It’s why you get an uncommitted movement.”

He said this is why Democrats lost votes from young men and voters of color in the 2024 election, claiming they need “new energy” that meets voters and the moment.
The video itself does not say anything about lawyers or Nessel.

Nessel reposted the video with her own message stating that the post was insulting to Democratic attorneys general “who have done more to fight back against the lawlessness of the Trump administration than any other group of elected officials, and not what our party needs right now.”

Gilchrist replied to Nessel’s tweet saying that the “Dem AGs are important and must be protected because they use the law to fight for our rights.”

He did back his own message in the response as well saying “we also need non-lawyers who bring diverse perspectives alongside them.”

“Having a law degree and/or having practiced law is currently the most common background for senators, members of Congress, and governors,” he said. “It’s time we elect people from diverse backgrounds to fix this broken system.”

The frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, has a law degree, is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is a former dean of the Wayne State University Law School.

Nessel sent a follow up statement to Gongwer News Service emphasizing the importance of the 440 lawsuits filed against President Donald Trump and his administration and again criticized Gilchrist’s disregard for lawyers.

“For the lieutenant governor, and a candidate for the highest elected office in the state, to fail to appreciate the important role lawyers play in today’s current landscape and our nation’s history is deeply concerning and offensive to those of us who have fought tirelessly to protect the rights of so many in our state,” Nessel said in a statement.
