G-A gets into playoffs despite
regular season finale loss
By Dale Martin
Going into the final game of the regular season both the Rams of G-A and the Rams of South Haven had four wins. Both teams thought a fifth win was needed to have a chance of making the 2025 State Playoffs.
South Haven captured a 21-6 win over the Rams October 24 at South Haven, however it was G-A who wound up getting into the playoffs when the playoff pairings were announced last Sunday.
G-A will play at Schoolcraft Friday, October 31 at 7 p.m. in the Division 7 playoff opener.
South Haven scored on two of its three first half possessions.
Ryker Rowland scored from the 4 yard line in the first quarter and Dominic Guzman from the one in the second quarter giving the host Rams a 14-0 lead at halftime.
August Zoet added the point after kicks.
G-A had three first half drives, one stalling at the South Haven 24 yard line and another at the 17.
G-A got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter with a 74 yard, 11 play drive with Jonah Ranes scoring from the 2 yard line. The pass for the two point conversion failed and South Haven’s lead had been cut to 14-6.
A South Haven fourth quarter drive stalled at the G-A 14 yard line. Zoet attempted a 31 yard field goal but the kick was wide left.
G-A took possession at its own 20 yard line and drove down to the South Haven 34 yard line. Patrick Armock then lofted a pass down the middle of the field intended for Ranes. At the last second Blake Slazek intercepted the pass at the 2 yard line ending the drive with less than 4 minutes remaining in the game.
G-A would get one more chance. The defense forced South Haven to punt and G-A took over at its own 30 yard line with less than a minute on the clock.
Armock rolled to his left looking for a receiver. He was hit as he released the ball and for the second time Slazek picked off the errant throw and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, sealing G-A’s fate with 25 seconds to play.
With the 21-6 win South Haven finishes the season with a 5-4 record, while G-A, now 4-5, looks forward to its first playoff appearance since 1997.
Jonah Ranes was the workhorse for the G-A offense. He lead all rushers with 91 hard earned yards, giving him 1017 yards for the season. He also had three catches for 55 yards.
On defense it was Ranes and Colton Robertson leading the way with 11 tackles each. Dominic Corsi had 10 stops and Cayden Allie made 9. The only weakness for G-A was allowing South Haven to convert on all four of its fourth down tries.

27-year playoff drought ends for G-A
By Bruce Rolfe
A 27-year playoff drought ended for the Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team when the MHSAA playoff pairings were announced Sunday.
The Rams, who completed the regular season with a 4-5 record, will play in the Division 7 first round at Schoolcraft Friday, October 31 at 7 p.m.
G-A dropped a 53-28 decision to the Eagles September 19.
G-A’s last playoff appearance was November 7, 1997, a 42-8 loss to Decatur.
“Definitely a sense of relief making the playoffs. That was a dark cloud hanging over the program. Tough to get kids to believe they could be the group to do it when it hadn’t been done in so long,” said G-A coach Chuck Hadley.
The G-A coach said he felt this year’s team had the potential to be the team to end the playoff drought.
He said the team set a goal of making the playoffs back in March.
“We knew with our schedule it was going to be tough, but that tough schedule gave us opportunities as well as the new playoff format,” explained the G-A coach.
Hadley said after his team losing to South Haven in the regular season finale, G-A would need a lot of help.
“The boys were pretty depressed after the game. But by the time we got back to school it appeared the football Gods were smiling on us. One by one teams we needed to lose lost and by the time I finally got to bed it appeared we were going to make it,” said the Ram coach.
Hadley said until the official announcement was made on the MHSAA Selection Sunday show on Fan Dual Sports, he would not allow himself to believe his team got into the playoffs.
“We had a watch party at my house and the boys were fired up to get another chance to get back on the field,” said Hadley.
The G-A coach admits Schoolcraft, the number one seed in the opening round bracket, will be a tough opening round playoff opponent.
But his team is excited for the opportunity. Hadley feels his team has improved “in all aspects of the game since week 4 and will be working this week for a better outcome.”
Tickets ($7) must be purchased through Gofan.co or with a credit card at the game.

Aggressiveness paying off for G-A spikers
By Bruce Rolfe
With the district tournament approaching, Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball coach Jonica Klimp is starting to see some qualifies emerge she feels will be important to be successful in the postseason.
G-A enjoyed strong passing, aggressive play at the net and had many digs in a four set win over Climax-Scotts (25-14, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18) October 27 at G-A High School.
“We’re getting more and more aggressive every game, which is good to see. Getting more comfortable at the net and we have to be aggressive to compete in the districts,” said the G-A coach.
Klimp saw contributions from multiple players in the win over C-S.
“That’s what I feel like we’ve missed in some years past, is we haven’t had those girls that were willing to see it, every single point. And we have more of that,” observed Klimp.
The Lady Rams fought back from an early deficit in one game, enjoyed a long stretch of strong play to build a double digit lead in another game and held off a C-S rally in another set to register the win.
Klimp, in her fourth year as G-A’s varsity volleyball coach, said this year is the first time she has defeated C-S in the cross river rivalry.
G-A watched C-S move in front early in the first set 7-3 and 9-5, but battled back to take its first lead 11-10.
The game remained close until G-A ran off eight straight points to move in front 23-13.
A kill by Wendi Trines gave the home team a 24-14 lead and then a hitting error by C-S closed out the first set win for the home team.
The second set was close all the way through.
C-S’ largest lead was four points.
G-A’s only lead was 1-0 and 24-23, however C-S closed with three straight points to secure its only win of the night.
The third set was close as well.
The two teams were tied 12-12, however G-A pulled in front 19-14, held off a C-S mini rally and won the set on a kill by Kayla Bortolussi.
G-A came to life in the middle of the fourth set, scoring seven straight points to build a 15-9 lead.
The Lady Panthers pulled to within 18-16 and 19-17, but G-A held on for the win.
