Judge honored, foster parents and
adoptive families celebrated


The Michigan Supreme Court  will host its 23rd annual Adoption Day event on Tuesday, Nov. 25 — a special court session that will include adoption finalizations and an awards ceremony for honorees within the child welfare system.  

The event will take place beginning at 10 a.m. in the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing. 

Following the adoption finalizations, the celebration will feature presentation of the 2025 Daniel J. Wright Lifetime Achievement Award to former Kent County Circuit Court Family Division Judge Terence J. Ackert, who currently serves in the Kent County Probate Court; and the 2025 Maura D. Corrigan Foster Family Lifetime Achievement Award to Brooke Frusti of Negaunee.

Ackert will be honored for his leadership in Kent County and statewide serving on forums and committees effectuating positive improvements to the child welfare system. 

Frusti is in the spotlight for her service in opening her home, together with her husband, as adoptive parents to eight children and foster parents to an additional five children.


Panel discussion focuses on
running a private practice


The Wolverine Bar Association will present “Running Your Own Firm: Straight Talk from Small Firm Lawyers” on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Longstreet in Detroit.

For those interested in private practice, the program will feature a panel discussion with attorneys Leonard Mungo, Tanisha Davis, Herbert Sanders, and Coleman Potts.

Keith Center plans Biennial Lecture


The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights will present its 2025 Biennial Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wayne State University Law School’s Partrich Auditorium in Detroit.

The lecture will feature Dr. Lester Spence, professor of Political Science and Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

Spence will be speaking on the topic of “Cultivating Radical Imagination:?Rethinking the Role of Institution Power in Detroit and Beyond.”   

Spence will explore the topics of democracy and the importance of civic engagement in Detroit.
