Roster filled with returning starters brings high expectations for Lady Panthers
By Bruce Rolfe
The sting from a one-point loss in overtime to Zion Christian in last year’s regional championship game, has inspired the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team to return to the regional championship game again for an opportunity to reach the next level.
That motivation, combined with a year of growth and a roster filled with returners and returning starters, leaves C-S coach Chip Paddock encouraged heading into the new season.
“Since then (last year’s regional championship game loss), this team has shared a common goal and has collectively prepared from last April until now in hopes of being somewhere special this coming March,” points out Paddock, entering his sixth year as the Lady Panther head coach.
C-S claimed the SCAA West Division championship with an 11-1 record, won a district championship and finished the season with a 19-6 overall record.
The roster is heavy with returning starters or players that saw significant playing time last year.
Seniors Holly Talbert (forward), Addy Reeves (center), Sophie Braithwaite (guard), Ashlynn Gilbert (forward), junior Kendal Reitz (guard), all started or saw significant playing time last season.
Junior Annabelle Edwards (power forward), who was injured most of the season, enjoyed a very impressive sophomore season and is also expected to be a key player.
Senior Chloe Czuk (forward) and sophomore Kyla Etheridge are the other returners.
Freshmen Alyse Langs (guard) and Olivia Bolt (forward) are newcomers to the team.
Paddock said based on early season practices, leadership and maturity has been strong.
“They’ve set the tone for how we practice, communicate, and operate. Practices are high-tempo and competitive, with players pushing each other every day. The effort, focus, and buy-in are already ahead of where we were at this point last season, a testament to our seniors and the culture they’ve built, rooted in respect, responsibility, and teamwork,” said Paddock.
“What shouldn’t go unrecognized is the pride our athletes take in their off-season preparation long before the season starts,” continued the Lady Panther coach.
Paddock said having a roster filled with players who have enjoyed a lot of success brings elevated expectations.
“The team has shared a common goal since March 12th, 2025 and has been working tirelessly to secure another opportunity at some success this coming March,” said the Lady Panther coach.
Paddock feels Mendon will be a tough opponent in the SCAA West Division C-S plays in.
