Court experience together key in
4-0 start by Lady Panthers
With the majority of the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team playing in games together throughout their high school years and as far back as jr. high or earlier, familiarity with each other on the court has become a key in the Lady Panthers’ 4-0 start.
Strong defense and court awareness were two keys in a 50-22 win over Colon December 19 at Colon and a 46-28 win over Constantine December 17 at C-S High School.
“Our court awareness, it’s definitely a lot better to have been playing with each other since we were like seven, eight years old. We know how each other is going to play. We know exactly where each other are. We all click,” said C-S senior Sophie Braithwaite.
The Lady Panthers continued a pattern of playing good defense and moving the ball well in the wins over Colon and Constantine. The team showed patience at the offensive end, waiting to locate an open player or make a nice pass to a cutting player to the basket in both wins.
“Offense has never really been our thing. Our offense this year, there’s something about our offense we’re just taking our time with it. Really running it, getting open shots that we need. It’s just something that we’ve been focusing on,” adds Braithwaite.
C-S coach Chip Paddock feels because many of the players on the team have been playing so long with each other the familiarity is transitioning into executing regularly at both ends of the floor.
“We have a pretty tenured group. And they understand how we want to play, when we want to play fast, when we want to slow it down,” offered the Lady Panther coach.
Paddock said seeing some good habits surface this early in the season has been pleasing.
“We’re pleased with what’s going on in our locker room. But we got to stay hungry within the process. We’re gonna always continue to dig for a little more,” adds Paddock.
The Lady Panthers held an opponent under 30 points for the third game at Colon.
C-S, which is allowing 26.5 points a game, pressured the ball at Colon, coming up with 26 steals.
C-S held the Magi to single digits all four quarters, moving out to a 18-4 lead after one quarter, 28-12 at halftime and 44-15 after three quarters.
Kendal Reitz stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals to lead C-S.

C-S wrestling coach likes the
direction team is heading
With the co-op arrangement with Martin dissolved and a younger roster blending in with some experienced wrestlers, Climax-Scotts wrestling coach Jason Wade is looking for growth each match.
There was depth and experienced wrestlers at most weight classes when C-S wrestled with Martin in the co-op arrangement.
Now that the co-op has been dissolved, wrestlers who are now wrestling regularly, including some younger wrestlers, are starting to show growth.
That growth continued to emerge for C-S in a 45-35 win over Galesburg-Augusta December 17 at G-A High School.
After falling behind 24-12 early in the match, C-S wrestlers took charge.
Dean Parks (157-pound weight class) with an 8-3 decision, and Bryce Birkam (175), with a pin in 1:20, sandwiched wins around a Jonah Ranes (165) pin for G-A, reducing G-A’s lead to 30-21.
Gixxer Blair (190), with a pin in 47 seconds, Easton VanMiddlesworth (215), with forfeit win, Malcolm Smith (285) with a pin in 45 seconds, and Tyler Bradley (113), with a pin in 1:04, closed out the match strong for C-S.
“Our co-op got dissolved. I think a lot of people thought we were going to kind of struggle a little bit. I know where our guys were at. We’ve got to get better in certain spots, but we’ve got a pretty solid team here. And I think we showed it tonight. We’ve got to keep improving. We’ve got to keep climbing that ladder and hopefully all these matches here are getting us ready for the post season. That’s where we really got to make our push,” adds Wade.
