A rivalry that exists between Climax-Scotts and Galesburg-Augusta brought higher energy levels to the court for players and fans from both schools December 30 in a girls varsity basketball clash Dec. 30 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
The anticipation of the matchup extended to the head coaches for both teams, but for another reason.
Current C-S girls varsity basketball coach Chip Paddock was the G-A freshman and JV head girls basketball coach and assistant varsity girls basketball coach from 2007-2012.
He was the girls basketball varsity assistant coach when the Lady Rams roared through the post season to the state finals game when G-A lost to Saginaw Nouvel 73-42.
Paddock was a coach of Katlyn’s throughout her high school career, starting as her freshman basketball coach.
The former G-A coach who once coached Dunithan, was now coaching against his former player.
Paddock said he enjoyed the experience coaching against a player he coached at G-A.
“It was awesome, A lot of respect for Galesburg-Augusta and a lot of respect for Katlyn. That program is going to be in good hands over there. She’ll take care of them for sure,” said Paddock, who was assistant boys varsity basketball coach at G-A in 2012-2014, head JV baseball coach at G-A in 2007-2009, and G-A’s head varsity baseball coach from 2009-2013.
Dunithan, a 2008 graduate of G-A High School, was eager to implement some things she may have learned from Paddock in her first role as a head varsity basketball coach against his team.
“It’s so nice to coach against someone that I idolized. He (Paddock) was my freshman coach. That’s one person that I love to watch coach. I watched him (coach) all the time. It’s nice to coach against him, but at the same time it’s nice to watch him coach too,” said Dunithan.
Paddock recalls Dunithan’s work ethic and leadership in high school stood out.
“She was a good leader with her voice, by her actions, the way she just handled her business. She put in time in the off season. Just fun to be around. A good kid,” said Paddock.
While Dunithan is currently in her first head coaching position at the varsity level, Paddock sees good coaching qualities.
“I think what she’s going to bring to Galesburg-Augusta is discipline, structure, and hopefully those kids and that community over there are going to embrace the amount of time she’s going to want to put into them. She’s going to be fabulous,” said the Lady Panther coach.
G-A held on for a 50-48 win, but in the end, both coaches left the court happy they had the opportunity to coach against each other.
