Volunteer at state parks, help protect natural areas

Several state parks in southern Michigan will host volunteer stewardship workdays in January. Volunteers are needed to help with removing invasive plants that threaten high-quality ecosystems in the parks.

Local workdays are scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, January 17 and 31, at Fort Custer Recreation Area (Kalamazoo County).

Volunteers will hike within Eagle Lake Prairie and help remove woody invasive species from one of the prairie restoration areas. Volunteers will learn to identify shrubs before cutting them down. All equipment will be provided. Long pants, long-sleeve shirts, and closed-toed shoes are highly recommended.

Registration is required for all volunteer workdays. To register, email Tyler Lidgard at LidgardT@Michigan.gov.
