1990 State Finalists Will Be Inducted Into C-S Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 5


With five starters graduating from the 1989 team and a squad featuring only three seniors dominated by youth, expectations weren’t very high when the Climax-Scotts baseball team took the field in 1990. But the determined group surprised many with a run to the State Finals where their season ultimately ended with a 7-6 loss to Traverse City St. Francis at C.O. Brown 
Stadium.

The 1990 Panther state finalist baseball team will be inducted into the C-S Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game Feb. 5.

3 G-A Seniors Hope To Secure $1000 Grant With Video Project


Three Galesburg-Augusta High School seniors are attempting to secure a $1000 grant for their school through a video competition offered through the Greg Jennings Foundation.

Seniors Sinque Ezbenko, Nate Wilson and Carter Way are attempting to demonstrate how great Galesburg-Augusta is by filming activities at and around G-A High School and the community to enter into the Greg Jennings Foundation “What Makes Our School Great” competition. Class Advisor Ardis Cook informed the three about the opportunity through the National Honor Society.

C-S Football Team Named Academic All-State; Todd Myers Recognized Individually


The Climax-Scotts football team was recognized by the Michigan High School Football Coach’s Association as a Division 8 Academic All-State selection and one of its members was honored as well.

A total of 16 teams in Division 8 were nominated and the top four teams receive plaques. C-S came in 11th with a 3.615 GPA, just ahead of Colon (3.530 GPA).

Senior Todd Myers was named to the 2015 Individual Academic All State team. He is only the second C-S senior to be named to the Academic All State football team, joining Adam Strong, who was Academic All-State for the 2001-2002 school year (2001 football season).

Avalon Farms’ New Hydroponic Greenhouses Are Producing Fresh Results


If a salad with fresh gourmet greens that tastes like it was recently picked from a garden wets your appetite in the middle of winter, a trip down south or out west used to be one of the only options.

But now, residents in Southwest Michigan can enjoy not only leaf lettuce, but numerous other fresh vegetables throughout the year thanks to improvements in the hydroponic greenhouse industry that one Climax farm has added to its line of agricultural products.

Avalon Farms, owned by Larry and Brigette Leach, constructed two hydroponic greenhouses and are finding the public is grasping the idea, especially in the fall and winter months when discussions about gardening and fresh garden produce is normally months away.

Three C-S Jr. High Students Are Winners
in 32nd America & Me Essay Contest


Three 8th grade students from Climax-Scotts Junior High School were recognized Wednesday as local winners in the 32nd annual America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.

Bobbie Jo Clark was the first place winner in the contest, Kristina Farnham was second and Danielle French, third. Nicki White and Kara Graham also submitted entries and received achievement awards.

Josh Tiller Is Lone Medalist For C-S Wrestling Team


Josh Tiller captured a first place medal for the Climax-Scotts varsity wrestling team at the Bellevue Invitational Jan. 27.

Tiller, wrestling at 119 pounds, was the lone Panther to medal at the tournament. The C-S freshman won his first match by a pin in 1:46, pinned his second opponent in 2:17, and earned a 5-0 decision in the championship match.

Opens Gift Shop In Climax


Mrs. Thomas (Alice) Mead of Climax opened a new Gift Shop here this week - “The Gift Gallery of Climax.” 

The new shop is located at 110 S. Main St., in the same building as the Beauty Shop and Barber Shop (same area as former K’s Curiosity Shop). Mrs. Mead plans to carry a complete line of moderately priced gifts to fit every occasion including a line of delicious Sanders boxed chocolates.

RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD


Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell attended the Eaton Rapids J. C. Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 24. Their son, Gary, was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for service to his community.

Grand Opening To Be Held Feb. 10


Mr. and Mrs. Claude Misner completed negotiations Wednesday evening to purchase the Rolfe Bros. Grocery in Climax. They opened the store to the public, Thursday morning.

They will formerly open their store at a grand opening on Wednesday, February 10 at which time they will feature grocery specials and favors for all.

Clarence and Stanley Rolfe purchased this store three and a half years ago from Charles A. Staffen, then known as Climax Grocery.

Mr. Robert Mayberry is owner of the store building.

Claude and Evelyn Misner have named their business — Misner’s Market and will carry the same assortment of merchandise as Rolfe’s with the meat department a specialty. Claude was employed at Sinclair’s Store for the past four years.

Proposed School Building Plans


On Monday, January 15th, at a general meeting attended by about one hundred electors with Mr. Fred Binckes, your Board was directed by a vote of the group present to have plans, specifications and working drawings prepared and bids taken for two identical 6-Room elementary school buildings - one to be built at Climax and one at Scotts and a Farm Shop to be built at Climax and used by the High School.

Guy Misner To Manage Packing Co.


Guy Misner has accepted the position as Manager of the Climax Packing Co., starting Feb. 1. This is a position that Mr. Misner has held for many years, formally for G. G. Hamilton and then for Moon & Abbott until the spring of 1921 when Mr. Wills succeeded him followed by Lawrence Reed.

The Juniors and Seniors are studying Biology as a new subject.
