Lady Panthers begin district play
March 4 against Bellevue


After seven days off, the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team closed out the regular season with games against Hillsdale Academy (February 24) and Pittsford (February 26) and will look ahead to the post-season.

C-S, with four starters and many players who saw significant playing time from last year’s team that lost 38-37 to Zion Christian in overtime in last year’s regional championship game returning, are hoping for a special post season run this season.

C-S, which entered the final two regular season games with a 13-6 record, will begin district tournament action March 4 against Bellevue at 5:30 p.m. at Martin.

Battle Creek St. Philip and Martin play in the other game March 4 and the two winners clash in the district championship game March 6 at 7 p.m. at Martin.

C-S defeated Bellevue twice in the regular season 53-9 and 51-13. The Lady Panthers also defeated St. Phil twice this season, 45-36 and 42-29.

Martin entered the final week of the regular season with a 9-9 record.

JV boys basketball team completes
season with 13-6 record


The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team finished the season with a 13-5 record after the team won the season finale 53-23 over Athens at C-S Jr./Sr. High School February 20.

The impressive C-S defense only allowed three points in the first quarter when the home team took a 13-3 lead, and one basket in the second quarter that helped C-S stretch the advantage to 16-5 at halftime.

The C-S offense picked up in the second half when the Panthers outscored Athens 35-18.

Ashton Heighton and Bryce Srackengast led C-S in scoring with nine points each.

Aiden Benoit’s six points led Athens in scoring.

C-S Falls To Hillsdale Academy


A big start helped Hillsdale Academy jump out to a 15-point first quarter lead and the Panther boys JV basketball team never recovered in a 60-36 loss to Hillsdale Academy on the road February 18.

C-S reduced the deficit to 14 points (35-21) at halftime but the home team outscored the Panthers 13-10 in the third quarter and 25-16 in the second half to hold on for the win.

Aaden Krick’s 10 points led C-S in scoring and Alexander Albarran-Aguilar added nine points.

C-S Drops Close Game at Hopkins


Hopkins outscored C-S 14-3 at the free throw line and dropped in seven three-point baskets on the way to a 52-46 win over the Panthers February 16 at Hopkins.

C-S trailed 13-9 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime but rallied to take a 36-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Hopkins, which made five-of-eight free throws in the fourth quarter, outscored the Panthers 17-10 in the final quarter to secure the win.

Luke Frost led C-S in scoring with 10 points.

Brandon Haynes selected as
new C-S varsity baseball coach


Climax-Scotts High School graduate and current Jr./Sr. High teacher Brandon Haynes has been selected as the new C-S varsity baseball coach.

According to C-S Communications & Public Relations Director Heather Wechsler, the school district received two applications for the varsity baseball coach opening and interviewed both 
candidates. The name of the other candidate was not provided by the C-S School District.

Haynes, a 2016 graduate of C-S, currently serves as the C-S Junior/Senior High School Counselor and looks forward to working with Panther athletes this season.

The vacancy was created after former C-S varsity baseball coach Kevin Langs announced he was stepping down from the position earlier this year.


Wrestlers advance to individual state finals

Climax-Scotts High School sophomore Gixxer Blair, senior Malcolm Smith and junior Cooper Dinse all qualified for the Division 4 Individual State Finals with top four finishes at the Individual Regionals February 21 at Martin.

Blair (175-pound weight class), placed first, Smith (215) placed second and Dinse (285) placed fourth.

The three Panthers qualify for the Individual State Finals March 6 & 7 at Ford Field.

Blair won his first match by a pin in 1:10, he defeated his semifinal opponent by a technical fall (15-0) and then pinned Cassopolis’ Elijah Wagoner in 28 seconds in the championship match.

Blair will take a 39-3 record into the Individual State Finals.

Smith advanced to the championship match by winning by pins in 34 seconds in each match. 

He had a rematch in the regional championship match with Reading’s Isaac Westfall, who he lost to in the individual district championship match 9-2 a week earlier, and the Reading junior defeated Smith by a 9-0 major decision in the regional championship match.

Smith will take a 43-4 record into the Individual State Finals.

Dinse won his first match by a 13-7 decision, but lost by a pin in 1:49 in the semifinal round. The C-S junior rebounded to win the consolation semifinal match by a pin in 1:21 but he lost the third place match by a pin in 51 seconds.

Dinse will take a 31-9 record into the Individual State Finals.

Easton VanMiddlesworth (190) and Lincoln Bartholomew (120), were both 0-2 on the day. 

VanMiddlesworth finishes the season with a 10-12 record and Bartholomew finishes the season with a 16-18 record.

Basketball team advances
to district semifinal game

The Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team combined an impressive defensive effort with a consistent offensive attack  that featured a potent three-point arsenal for three quarters, to post a 61-17 district tournament opening win over Tekonsha February 23 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

The win sent C-S into the district semifinal game against Marshall Academy February 25 with a 6-14 record.

Battle Creek St. Philip and Battle Creek Calhoun Christian played in the other semifinal game February 25.

The District championship game is February 27 at 7 p.m. at C-S with the winner advancing to the Marcellus Regional March 3 at 7 p.m. to face the Lawrence District champion.

Battle Creek Calhoun Christian defeated Bellevue in the other first round game at C-S February 23, 69-63.

C-S’ harassing defense forced Tekonsha into 24 turnovers and a cool 23 percent (7-30) shooting night overall from the floor.

Tekonsha struggled with C-S’ pressure defense quickly, turning the ball over 10 times in the first quarter.

The Panthers, behind 13 points including a trio of three-point baskets from Nyle Sattler, responded with a strong effort at the offensive end and raced out to a 21-4 lead after one quarter.

Six different Panthers scored in the second quarter when the home team shot 44 percent from the floor and expanded the lead to 40-14 at halftime.

The Panther defense shut down Tekonsha in the second half when the visitors shot just 7 percent overall from the floor (1-15).

The Indians were held to just one basket from the floor in the third quarter. 

Seven more points from Nyle Sattler and six from Liam LaSala helped C-S to a 60-16 advantage after three quarters. 

Tekonsha managed just one free throw in the fourth quarter.

Nyle Sattler, who connected on four of C-S’ three-point baskets, finished with a game high 24 points to go with seven rebounds, four steals and one blocked shot. Liam LaSala had 12 points and five rebounds and Maddox Wyman contributed eight points and five rebounds.

Panthers click in 67-35 win over Athens

Improved shooting from the floor and good defense gave the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team a much needed 67-35 win over Athens in the regular season finale at C-S Jr./Sr. high School.

C-S ended a three-game losing streak that included a 57-32 loss to Hillsdale Academy when the team shot just 17 percent overall, and a 57-26 loss to Hopkins when the team shot 24 percent overall from the floor.

The Panthers entered the district tournament February 23 with a 5-14 record.

On the strength of a good night shooting from behind the three-point line (7-for-18) where the team shot 39 percent, C-S enjoyed a strong night shooting overall, making 47 percent (27-57) of its overall attempts. The Panthers were shot 51 percent (20-39) from two-point range.

The Panthers also enjoyed a strong game defensively, forcing Athens into 18 turnovers while holding the visitors to 32 percent shooting overall from the floor including 2-for-18 from three-point range.

Nyle Sattler, who connected on four triples, and his brother Dane Sattler, who had two three-point baskets, scored nine and eight points respectively in the opening quarter, helping C-S to a 23-14 lead after one quarter.

C-S had a slight down turn in offensive production in the second quarter but forced four Athens turnovers and took a 36-24 lead into halftime.

The Panthers held Athens to 27 percent shooting and forced six more turnovers, leading to an 18-6 surge in the third quarter and a 54-30 lead entering the fourth quarter.

C-S scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 31 points (61-30) .

A basket by Athens with 3:52 left in the game pulled the visitors to within 63-34, which was the closest the Indians managed to get the rest of the game.

Nyle Sattler finished with a game high 24 points, Tye Chambers scored 12 points and Dane Sattler added 10 points to go with eight assists and five steals.

Brennan Godfrey and Aidan Lane each scored 13 points to lead Athens in scoring.

Hillsdale Academy Pins 57-32 Setback on Panthers


C-S struggled with cold shooting and turnover issues in a 57-32 loss to Hillsdale Academy February 18 on the road.

C-S made just 17 percent of its attempts overall (9-52) from the floor. The Panthers made more three-point attempts (6-26) then two-point tries (3-26).

Hillsdale Academy moved in front 11-7 after one quarter.

One three-point basket by Nyle and Dane Sattler in the second quarter was all the offense C-S managed and the visitors found themselves trailing 31-13 at halftime.

C-S had nine of its 20 turnovers in the second quarter.



The Panthers struggled through a 2-for-16 floor shooting performance in the third quarter and trailed 50-21 after three quarters.

Hillsdale Academy held the upper hand under the boards by a 46-35 margin, including a 12-9 advantage under the offensive glass.

Nyle Sattler’s 17 points led C-S in scoring.
