Pair to be honored at annual Patriot of the Year festivities

U.S. Senator Gary Peters and Detroit News Editorial Page Editor Nolan Finley will receive “Patriot of the Year” awards at the 13th Annual Patrick Henry Event this Thursday, March 12 at the San Marino Club in Troy.

“Patriot Week renews the spirit of America by deepening the appreciation of our founding First Principles, key documents and speeches, Founding Fathers and other great patriots, and flags from our history,” said Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren, co-founder of Patriot Week his daughter Leah. “To maintain our liberties, we need to recognize not only the contributions of individuals like Patrick Henry and the Second Continental Congress, but also applaud the contributions of modern-day patriots like Nolan Finley. Senator Gary Peters has co-sponsored the U.S. Senate resolution recognizing Patriot Week, which has been unanimously passed for 7 years. We are very grateful for his fantastic support.”

The event, which will run from 6:30-9 p.m., is held to commemorate the anniversary of Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” speech. The March 1775 speech by Henry served as a powerful call to action and as a rallying cry for the American Revolution.

The family-friendly event also will feature The Patriot Players’ reenactment of the Second Continental Congress debating the Declaration of Independence. Retired Wayne County Circuit Judge Lita Popke, who now serves as a mediator in the
Detroit office of JAMS, will serve as emcee, while Henry Nelson will portray Patrick Henry.

ACLU Creates new window display with crucial and timely message: ‘Know Your Rights’

To provide the public what they need to know when exercising their constitutional rights, the ACLU of Michigan has installed a 12-panel window display at its Detroit headquarters with the message: “Know Your Rights.”

The colorful design, which faces Woodward Ave., where thousands pass by each day, includes a QR Code that takes people to the ACLU of Michigan homepage, where they will find detailed Know Your Rights guides in English, Spanish and Arabic.

The guides include information on what people need to know when protesting, approached by immigration enforcement, as well as up-to-date information for international students, and more. There’s also advice for school districts about how they can protect the rights of immigrant children.
