Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from roughly 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions. Teams qualify for the international rounds at their country’s national rounds. The Jessup Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United
Nations. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
Competing against approximately 95 teams at the United States national tournament in Atlanta, the Wayne Law team delivered an exceptional showing, finishing the preliminary rounds with a perfect 4–0 record before advancing through the round of 32. The team ultimately reached the round of 16, placing them among the top competitors in the country.
Under the competition’s scoring structure, 13 U.S. teams advance to the international rounds. In addition to the eight teams that progressed from the octofinals, five additional teams are selected based on their preliminary round scores. Wayne Law was one of those top five teams, earning a coveted invitation to compete internationally.
The team—Katie Koczak, Rachel Dodds, Haneen Hamideh, Noah Starr, and Erin Dorn—will represent Wayne Law at the international tournament in Washington, D.C., during the week of March 30. This marks the second consecutive year that Wayne Law has qualified for the global competition.
The team also earned individual and written advocacy distinctions. Erin Dorn ranked as the 13th best oralist in the tournament, placing among the top speakers out of roughly 350 participants. In addition, Wayne Law’s written memorials ranked 18th out of the 95 participating schools.
Wayne Law’s success reflects months of intensive research, writing, and advocacy preparation. Members of the Wayne Law community are encouraged to congratulate the team as they prepare for the international competition in Washington, D.C., where they will represent both the law school and the United States on the global Jessup stage.
