As a second-year student at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Fatima Naeem recently made it her mission to do “something meaningful for the community” as a member of the current Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Leadership Class.
The result will be showcased on Saturday, April 18 at scenic Kensington Metropark when the inaugural Stride for Justice 5K Run & Walk takes place for the benefit of First Step, a Wayne County based nonprofit founded in 1978.
“The event will bring together attorneys, law students, and members of the broader legal community to raise funds for First Step, a nonprofit organization that provides essential services and support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence,” said Naeem. “Proceeds from the event will benefit First Step’s programs serving individuals and families in our community.”
The need to support the program first came into Naeem’s view when she was serving an internship at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
“One of my supervisors was telling me about all of the existing barriers that hinder victims of domestic violence from accessing justice – such as being unable to afford a $10 Uber to attend a court hearing or not having appropriate clothing to appear in court,” Naeem indicated. “It was absolutely jarring to me to hear those kinds of stories, which is why I was motivated to help out.”
Naeem is being aided in organizing the event by fellow WLAM Leadership Class members Madeline Tripp, Zaineb-Stalene Al-Dhalimi, Stephanie Golphin, Jamie Kendall, Allura Williams, Tia Smith, and Roneca Glenn.
“Kensington Metropark is a beautiful site for the event, which will take place on paved paths that go along the woods and water there,” Naeem said of the 4,481-acre park in western Oakland County that features hilly terrain and Kent Lake.
Parking for entrants will be at the West Boat Launch lot. Packet pick up begins at 9 a.m. on race day with the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run or walk beginning at 10 o’clock.
The cost of entering is $55 for adults and $35 for children 12 and under.
