Wood Carving in Prairie Home Cemetery Is Complete

Wood carver Sam Dougherty has completed a chain saw wood carving in Prairie Home Cemetery the Climax Village Council commissioned him to develop out of a stump of an old Burr Oak tree that was removed last summer.

The Council had the tree removed after lightening placed a crack down the middle, creating a public safety issue.

Because the tree was so old, possibly older than the village itself according to the tree remover, the Council commissioned Dougherty, owner of Starving Carvist, to carve items in a 10-foot stump that was left with themes that have historical links to the Village of Climax, at a cost of $2400.

Dougherty’s carvings include an Indian bust, representing some of the earliest settlors in the village, a team of 20 horses pulling a combine, representing Hiram Moore’s first combine machine, a log school house, representing the first school house in the village that was located in the area of the cemetery, the Climax Cereal and Climax Crescent newspapers, representing the Village of Climax’ oldest business, and an impressive carving of a panther on top, representing the Climax-Scotts Community Schools’ mascot.

A Climax man shared a vision he has of creating a small community park at a vacant parcel of land currently owned by the Village of Climax at the regular Climax Village Council meeting Tuesday.

David Hamilton, of South 40th Street, would like to turn two vacant parcels of land currently owned by the Village of Climax that sits next to a building he owns at 110 South Main Street, into a small park.

He said he would like to install a white fence all the way around the two parcels. He also plans to install two benches, a picnic table, and plant trees, flowers and shrubs in one of the vacant parcels.

County Sheriff’s Department Outline Details Surrounding Triple Homicide;
Have Collected Some DNA Evidence

Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department authorities are hoping DNA evidence and a latent finger print of a possible suspect collected at the scene of the triple homicide in Pavilion Township Aug. 30, 2000 will be a key to putting the person responsible for the murders of Marinus and Sary Polderman and their daughter Anna Lewis, behind bars.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department released detailed information for the first time surrounding the triple homicide at a press conference Monday morning and the details are grisly.

Burglars Get $86 from Climax School

Burglars entered the Climax School early Tuesday morning by forcing open the front door and then jimmied the locked office door. They opened the safe by smashing the combination but found no money there. However they did get $86 from two locked filing cabinets which they forced open. An electric drill, used to drill out the safe combination caused a fuse to blow out and stopped the electric clocks at 3:12 A.M. The robbery was discovered at 7:00 A.M. when Fred Roof, Custodian, arrived for work.
State Police and the Sheriff’s Department made a thorough investigation. No fingerprints were found.

The Augusta and Vicksburg school also reported similar robberies happening the same night.

It seems to be established that the burglars are from Indiana and that police know who the members are. All they need is enough evidence for conviction.

On February 8 they robbed at Schoolcraft, Marcellus and Constantine. Early in March, Litchfield and Homer. March 27 they were at Bangor, Coloma, Stevensville. Baroda and Covert.

Discuss Community Building Project

A successful public meeting was held Wednesday evening at the Climax School for the purpose of further discussing the need and feasibility of a Community Center building in Climax. Wesley Graham, Chairman, very ably conducted the meeting.

The majority of opinion seems to be that we are in dire need of a gymnasium-auditorium type building in our community. The next question is raising funds to finance such a building. There are several ways in which this could be accomplished, but the main method will have to be individual donations.

The actual cost of such a building has not definitely been determined, but it is estimated that a goal of at least $75,000 should be set.
