New softball field brings positive response

By Bruce Rolfe

From smoother surfaces, to updated batting cages and bull pens, to an impressive scoreboard to its overall appearance, reaction from the Climax-Scotts girls varsity softball team about the new softball complex the Lady Panthers played their first game at April 7 was all positive.

The new softball field was part of a $16.2 million bond project approved by C-S School District voters in May, 2023 for district-wide improvements, including $1,000,000 for athletic related improvements.

The boys baseball team had the opportunity to play its first game at the renovated Robert L. Weessies Jr. Field that includes many of the same improvements that the softball complex has last year.

Some have compared the new bullpen area and batting cages and overall appearance at both fields to a small community college  facility.

While the Lady Panthers have had some practice time on the new field and have used the new bullpen and batting cages facility in the days leading up to the season opener, the April 7 doubleheader was the first opportunity to play a game on the new field.

The Panthers didn’t let their fans down, sweeping a doubleheader over Howardsville Christian, 18-8 and 17-2.

A smoother playing surface is something that caught the attention of senior Ashlynn Gilbert, who has started the season playing leftfield.

“What I enjoy about the new field is that it doesn't have any holes from the gophers and it's a lot safer I also really love having a scoreboard that works and it looks pretty cool too. I'm really excited to play on it this year,” said Gilbert.

Senior Holly Talbert also feels a smoother infield and outfield surface should help the team defensively but she feels other amenities that are part of the new softball field complex will help the team as well.

“I think the batting cages will help a lot because we’ll get a lot more reps,” said the C-S senior.

Senior Addy Reeves said she’s grateful to have the opportunity to play on the new field her senior year.

“It’s beautiful. We’ve got bigger batting cages, more room. The bullpens are a lot nicer then the ones we had last year. The dugouts are beautiful. The dugouts are nice and close. There’s rooms right off the dugout for equipment,” said Reeves.

C-S varsity softball coach Janae Gibson said she’s happy her team will have the opportunity to establish memories on the new softball field, but was also thankful C-S voters approved the bond that helped pay for the new facility.

“Thankful to have a beautiful facility to play softball. We won’t forget the history and memories created on the field out back, but what we are blessed to have as our new field is incredible. The way the field plays and looks is top notch. We talk as a team how we want to show our appreciation by the way we take pride in caring for our facility,” said the Lady Panther coach.

Strong pitching helps C-S baseball team to pair of wins

Two strong pitching performances helped the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team to a pair of wins after the Panthers started the season with a 2-1 loss.

Nyle Sattler, Alex Wurtzel and Maximus Wurtzel combined on a four-hitter in a five-inning 11-1 win over Pittsford April 10 at Robert L. Weessies Field and Lincoln Dzwik and Bryce Birkam teamed up on a one-hitter in a 19-1, two-inning win over Athens April 9, also at Robert L. Weessies Field.

Sattler started and was credited with the win over Pittsford. He allowed one hit over three innings, walked four batters and struck out two.

Alex Wurtzel allowed two hits and one earned run in one inning with three strikeouts and Maximus Wurtzel tossed one scoreless inning and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.

Jackson Knickerbocker, who drove in two runs, Dane Sattler, who had a double, and Nyle Sattler, who had one RBI, each had one hit for C-S.

C-S, now 2-1, took advantage of five Pittsford errors that led to six unearned runs.

A late rally lifted Kalamazoo Hackett Prep to a 2-1 win over the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team April 7 at Robert L. Weessies, Jr. Field.

The Panthers scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning and held a 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning.

Battle Creek St. Phil’s Lincoln Dzwik, playing for C-S in a co-op arrangement between C-S and St. Phil, started the bottom of the second inning with a walk. He stole second base and advanced to third base on an Alex Wurtzel ground out.

Bryce Birkam then came through with an RBI single to rightfield.

Hackett knotted the game in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth with an unearned run on an error.

Singles by Nyle Sattler, Dane Sattler and Bryce Birkam along with a double by Jackson Knickerbocker accounted for the C-S hits.

C-S graduate eager to give back as coach for golf team

2016 C-S graduate Evan Koutny is enjoying his first year coaching the C-S golf team.

Evan Koutny enjoys the work he does as a project manager for J&J Sheet Metal in the heating and cooling industry, but the 2016 Climax-Scotts High School graduate is also enjoying an opportunity to give back to the school district he attended K-12 at.

Koutny was named the C-S golf coach and is thoroughly enjoying his first year coaching.

“It feels good. I’ve been in this community my entire life. Kindergarten through my senior year I was here. I have two sisters that went through this school system, quite a few years older than me, but they walked the same halls as me. I had some of the same teachers. It's cool to come back and really see how it's changed in the few years since I haven't been here and just be a part of that change,” explained the C-S graduate.

He played on the Panther golf team his junior and senior years and when he learned longtime C-S golf coach and retired teacher Doug Robinson (known as D-Rob) would not be returning, he jumped at the opportunity and is glad he did.

“I've just kind of always wanted to do it. I've always thought about it in the back of my mind. I knew D-Rob wasn't going to do it forever. And this program kind of helped me out a lot. Kind of put me in a good spot, and I played golf a ton. It's a huge part of my life now. So I saw the spot opening up and D-Rob really going into retirement. I just thought, what a good opportunity to try and get back in there and be part of the community again.  I’m excited to do it,” observed Koutny.

Koutny recalled how Robinson encouraged him when he wasn’t very familiar with the sport. He embraces  following the footsteps of the former popular C-S teacher and golf coach.

“D-Rob was a real big influence. When I first picked up the golf clubs, it was my junior year and I'd never played organized golf before that. Never played on a course. He was just a real good coach. Welcoming me into it, kind of helping people out that were brand new. He didn't neglect anybody because they didn't know how to swing a club. It was a real cool feeling to be part of something when you'd never done it before,” said Koutny.

Koutny went on to play golf on a club team two years at Ferris State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management.

After a handful of practices and matches, Koutny is enjoying his first opportunity at coaching.

“It's rewarding, I would say. Some of these kids are new to the game, and some have played for a few years. It's very rewarding to see their excitement after a good shot, or when they're really starting to figure something out,” said the C-S graduate.

“I'm not a swing coach, I'm not a training professional, but there's little things I could do that help them really change their game, and it's cool to see the spark in them when they find out they can actually do something,” adds Koutny.

Koutny said his work boss supports his ambitions of being the Panther golf coach and the C-S grad said he would like to continue coaching the golf team as long as he can and as long as the school district wants him to continue in the role.

Koutny is among a trio of 2016 C-S graduates who have returned to give back to their alma mater as coaches.

Brandon Haynes is in his first year as the Panther varsity baseball coach, and Adam Audette is his assistant coach. Audette is also an assistant coach of the C-S PantherBot robotics team heading to the State Championships at Saginaw Valley State University April 16-18.

“I think about that all the time. I was just talking to Brandon Haynes before our match. It was real cool to see it come full circle like that. It’s funny, 10 years ago you wouldn’t think that all three would be here coaching something at the same time. It’s cool,” adds Koutny.
