Senior-Parent Day ceremonies

Fourteen Panthers qualify for
MHSAA State Finals in track

Nine members of the Climax-Scotts boys track team and five members of the girls track team qualified for the MHSAA Division 4 State Finals May 30 at Baldwin Middle School.

Athletes qualify for the Division 4 State Finals by finishing in the top two in each event or by meeting a qualifying standard.

C-S sophomore Max Wurtzel qualified in three events, senior Gabe Walliczek, junior Elijah Bowron, and freshman Alex Albarran qualified in two events, and seniors Liam LaSala and Hunter LaSala, junior Maddox Wyman and sophomores Alex Wurtzel and Tyler Peck, qualified in one event for the boys.

C-S seniors Sophie Braithwaite, and Paige Amos and junior Annabelle Edwards,  qualified in two events, and freshman Nina Garcia and senior Addy Reeves qualified in one event for the C-S girls.

Maximus Wurtzel qualified in the 100-meter dash, as a member of the 4x200-meter relay team and in the 400-meter run.

He settled for a second place finish in the 100-meter dash, finishing just .21 seconds behind first place finishing Elijah Marlowe of Eau Claire (11.11) with a time of 11.32.

The C-S sophomore joined Alexander Albarran, Elijah Bowron, and Alex Wurtzel in a third place finishing effort in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:34.72 that qualified the quartet for the state finals.

Wurtzel had a personal best time of 52.14 finishing in third place in the 400-meter run that also qualified him for the state finals.

Tyler Peck, Alexander Albarran, Bowron and Maddox Wyman placed fifth in the 4x100-meter relay but their time of 45.93 qualified the team for the state finals.

Walliczek, who has already set the school record in the shot put and discus this year, finished first in both events at the regionals. He had a throw of 48’02.00” in the shot put and a throw of 167’08” in the discus.

Teammate senior Liam LaSala finished second in the discus and qualified for the state finals with a personal best throw of 130’00”.

His twin brother Hunter LaSala qualified for the state finals in the shot put with a personal best throw of 42’01.75”.

Annabelle Edwards qualified for the state finals with a first place finish in the high jump with a leap of 4’09.00”. She joined Paige Amos, Nina Garcia-Delgado and Sophie Braithwaite in a third place effort with a time of 1:54.14 in the 4x200-meter relay that qualified the quartet for the state finals.

Braithwaite also qualified for the state finals in the 100-meter dash where she broke here own school record with a time of 12.91 for a first place finish.

Amos also qualified in the 200-meter dash where she finished second with a time of 27.57, just .16 behind first place finishing Clara Slattery of Kalamazoo Hackett (25.41).

Reeves settled for a second place finish in the long jump with a distance of 14’07.50”, just 5.5” behind the first place finisher (15’02.00”), but she still qualified for the state finals.

The C-S boys finished in fourth place with 87 points. Hackett won the boys event with 119.5 points.

The Lady Panthers finished in a tie for fourth with White Pigeon with 66 points. Hackett was also regional champions in the girls event with 164 points.

The C-S boys are currently ranked 6th in the state and have qualified for team state finals at Hillsdale May 23.

C-S captures Battle of
Panthers trophy at Cornerstone 


Carter Dzwik pitched a masterful one-hitter and Nyle Sattler blasted two triples and drove in three runs to lead the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team to a 11-0 win over Frankfort at Cornerstone University May 16.

The Panthers took a 13-4 record into a scheduled road game at Schoolcraft May 20.

The game against Athens May 18 was postponed because of rain and has been scheduled to be made up May 26 at Athens.

Dzwik, a senior at Battle Creek St. Philip playing in a co-op arrangement with C-S, struck out 13 of the 20 batters he faced. The St. Phil Tiger threw 56 of his 89 pitches for strikes and walked two batters over five innings worked.

The St. Phil senior, who threw a six inning no-hitter in his previous start, has allowed just one hit, no runs and struck out 28 batters in his last 11 innings pitched.

Sattler’s second triple of the game in the top of the fifth inning drove in three runs.

Strong Pitching Leads C-S To Sweep Over Mendon

Nyle Sattler and Bryce Birkam teamed up on a three-hitter in a 12-3 Climax-Scotts win, and Carter Dzwik threw a six-inning no-hitter in a 6-0 win in the second game, helping the Panthers to a sweep of a doubleheader over 
Mendon May 12 at Robert L. Weessies, Jr. Field in Climax.

Sattler started and pitched the first five innings for the win in the first game. He gave up three hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out seven Hornets.

Battle Creek St. Philip’s Lincoln Dzwik, playing on a co-op arrangement with C-S, led a 10-hit attack with four hits and one RBI for C-S.

Birkam pitched a hitless sixth inning. He did not allow any walks and had three strikeouts.

Carter Dzwik was dominant in the second game no-hitter, walking three batters and striking out 15 of the 23 batters he faced.

Nyle Sattler had two of C-S’ four hits.

Lady Panthers top Frankfort
and sweep Parchment


The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of nine Frankfort errors in a 13-5 win over the Panthers of Frankfort May 16 at Cornerstone University.

The Lady Panthers took an 18-4 record into a May 20 game at Schoolcraft.

The game against Athens May 18 was postponed because of rain and has been scheduled to be made up May 26 at Athens.

Alyse Langs allowed six hits and two earned runs over seven innings worked for the win. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Battle Creek St. Phil’s Addi Dzwik, playing in a co-op arrangement with C-S, joined C-S senior Addy Reeves with three hits. Reeves had a triple and drove in three runs.

Nine Frankfort errors led to four unearned runs.

Lady Panthers Sweep Parchment

The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team responded to a pair of losses to Mendon by sweeping a pair from Parchment May 14 at Parchment.

A one-out RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning by Quinn Dzwik broke a tie and lifted the Lady Panthers to a 12-11 win in the second game.

C-S won the first game 7-3.

Chloe Czuk started the ninth inning of the second game on second base. She advanced to third base on a bunt single to third base by Olivia Bolt.

Battle Creek St. Phil’s Quinn Dzwik, playing in a co-op arrangement with C-S, then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the walk off win.

Dzwik, who had three RBI, and Bolt, who drove in one run. each had three hits in the second game.

Alyse Langs earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and no runs across three innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out one.

Addi Dzwik pounded out three hits including a double, drove in one run and had one stolen base in the first game.

Langs scattered five hits and did not allow an earned runs in seven innings pitched for the win. She walked two and struck out nine.

Mendon Tops C-S Twice

Mendon picked up two big SCAA wins over the Lady Panthers May 12 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

Mendon took advantage of three errors in the first game that led to three unearned runs in a 5-3 win.

The Lady Panthers committed four more errors in the second game that led to four unearned runs.

C-S had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the first inning in the first game after Quinn Dzwik and Alyse Langs delivered one-out singles. Mendon was able to close out the win on a fly out and ground out.

Quinn Dzwik and Langs, who had a double and one RBI, each had three hits.

Langs suffered the loss in the first game, allowing six hits, two earned runs, one walk and she struck out seven.

Quinn Dzwik added two more hits in the second game including a double.

Addy Reeves was the loser on the mound in the second game.

Two C-S golfers medal at
Conference Championship;
Pejakovich is All-Conference


The Climax-Scotts golf team had two medalists and one All-Conference player at the SCAA Conference Championship match May 18 at Riverside Golf Course.

C-S junior Gixxer Blair earned a fourth place medal and senior Ryan Pejakovich medaled with a seventh place finish.

Pejakovich was All-Conference with a 42.40 average for 6th place.

C-S finished third at the Conference Championship with a 350.

Hillsdale won the event with a 339, followed by Jackson Christian (341).

Blair was low shooter for C-S, posting an 82. Pejakovich finished with an 84, Cooper Dinse had a 86 and Easton VanMiddlesworth rounded out the four low scorers for C-S with a 98.
