The American Bar Association and TEDLaw are partnering to explore a first-of-its-kind immersive professional development experience designed to help lawyers build the human capabilities that will become increasingly important as the legal profession navigates rapid technological and societal change.
The inaugural ABA + TEDLaw founding cohort event, which will launch with about 150 participants, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT) Oct. 1 at the Jenner & Block law firm in Chicago. It will combine the ABA’s reach, expertise and connection to the legal profession with TEDLaw's human-centered approach to learning, focusing on judgment, professional identity, collaboration, adaptability, ethical decision-making, leadership and working effectively alongside emerging technologies.
A central goal of the initiative is to create a cohort that brings together people who do not always have the opportunity to learn alongside one another. Participants will represent different stages of their careers, practice settings, areas of expertise and perspectives, including law students and educators, new and experienced lawyers, law firm and organizational leaders, professional development professionals, innovators and practitioners from across the legal profession.
By bringing different experiences and perspectives into the same conversations, the initiative seeks to create opportunities for participants to test assumptions, strengthen judgment, build relationships and explore challenges facing the profession from multiple points of view.
“The legal profession is changing at an extraordinary pace, and the ABA has an important role to play in helping lawyers not simply respond to that change but lead through it,” ABA President Barbara J. Howard said. “Our partnership with TEDLaw gives us an opportunity to reimagine professional development — bringing together lawyers, law students, educators and legal leaders to strengthen the judgment, adaptability, leadership and human capabilities that will define our profession’s future. Oct.1 is just the beginning of what we believe can become a powerful new model for lifelong learning across the legal profession.”
Discussion topics include “Thinking Clearly;” “What You Don’t See;” “Listening Across Difference;” and “Practicing Law in the AI Age.”
The year following the inaugural event will provide an opportunity to learn alongside the founding cohort: identifying which experiences have the greatest impact, how ideas translate into participants' professional environments and how ongoing community can support meaningful development.
The ABA + TEDLaw initiative reflects a broader vision for professional development that moves beyond the traditional transfer of information. Together, the organizations will explore how their complementary strengths can create learning experiences that are engaging, experiential and capable of producing development that continues long after an individual program concludes.
