Now in its 12th year, Oakland County Manufacturing Day is planned by Oakland County Michigan Works!. The event is part of a national celebration of this rewarding career track. Nationwide, more than 3,000 employers are hosting student tours.
“This event gives Oakland County students an opportunity to see for themselves the types of careers and jobs that are available in our region,” said Oakland County Executive David Coulter. “The need for skilled workers is stronger than ever, and these visits will allow students to picture themselves working in these fields in jobs that are close to home.”
Students participating in Oakland County Manufacturing Day receive a close-up look at the jobs of engineers, technicians, skilled trade employees and support staff during the three-hour visits. They step into design labs, testing centers, production pods and other manufacturing environments.
“Manufacturing Day is an opportunity to bring education and industry together in meaningful, hands-on ways,” said Oakland Schools Superintendent Kenneth Gutman. “Thanks to partnerships with advanced manufacturers throughout Oakland County, students are gaining firsthand insight into the technologies, skills and career opportunities driving modern manufacturing. Experiences like these help students see what’s possible and build a stronger connection between what they’re learning today and the careers they can pursue tomorrow.”
Aerospace manufacturing in Southeast Michigan has experienced rapid growth over the past decade, with jobs in this sector growing by 35%, based on industry data. Tour host and sponsor Triple Inc., located in Troy, specializes in high-precision aerospace machining.
“Manufacturing Day is important because it provides students with awareness and exposure to the outstanding aerospace machining careers available right here in their community,” said Triple Inc. COO Matt Minor. “It’s truly a twofold opportunity: Students gain valuable insight into a potential future career, while our employees have the chance to engage with young people, share their experiences and inspire the next generation of manufacturing professionals.”
Madison Heights-based Mopec Group, another tour host and sponsor, is a leading manufacturer of medical equipment and laboratory products for hospitals, universities, morgues and a variety of other markets.
"At Mopec Group, our success is built by the people we invest in and then show up every day to make it happen,” said CEO Francis X. Dirksmeier. “Modern manufacturing offers rewarding careers in engineering, technology, service, project management and leadership. We want students in our community to see their opportunities firsthand, right at home.”
This year’s full roster of tour hosts consists of 3-Dimensional Services Group, ABB Robotics, AirBoss Flexible Products, AkzoNobel, Ascent Aerospace, Atlas Copco — New Hudson, Barron Industries, Brose North America, Complete Automation, Cosma Body Assembly Michigan, Dauch Corporation, Douglas Dynamics, Flex N Gate Troy, Gonzalez Production Systems, Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering, Inc., HIROTEC AMERICA, MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions, Mayville Engineering Company, Moeller Aerospace, Mopec Group, Oakland Community College, Panther Metalflow, Piston Automotive — Auburn Hills Facility, Pratt Miller, Signarama Troy — Metro Detroit, Star Cutter, Three M Tool & Machine, Triple Inc., TSM Corporation, Visioneering, Williams International and Witzenmann USA.

These include quality control, logistics, welding, design and engineering, maintenance, programmable logic controller robotics, mechatronics, metallurgy, metrology and project management. In 2019, the National Association of Counties recognized Oakland County with a Best in Category achievement award for Manufacturing Day.
