On March 10, students from Sexton High School in Lansing and Haslett High School in Haslett came to the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing to participate in the inaugural CCC+ program. During their visit, students had an opportunity to hear oral arguments in the courtroom, engage with justices of the Court following arguments, and learn more about Michigan’s judicial system by touring the MSC Learning Center.
On September 10, Chief Justice Cavanagh visited Sexton High School during the school’s Senior Assembly. She applauded Sexton’s participation in CCC+ and presented students and officials who attended the March program with a framed commemorative
photograph of their group with MSC justices, which was signed by all seven justices.
“Court Community Connections has always been about bringing the courts and our communities closer together,” Chief Justice Cavanagh said . “CCC+ gives us an opportunity to build on that idea by welcoming students directly into the Hall of Justice and giving them a firsthand look at the work of the Michigan Supreme Court.”
On September 28, Justice Hood attended a Haslett Board of Education meeting to recognize Haslett High School for taking part in the March CCC+ program. Justice Hood delivered remarks about the importance of connecting students and communities with Michigan’s courts before presenting March CCC+ participants with their own framed and signed commemorative photograph.
“Programs like Court Community Connections Plus are important because they invite students and the community into their Court, their Hall of Justice,” Justice Hood said. “That’s what we have here in this photo: a memorialization of students and the courts coming together. We’re trying to do our part to encourage civics education and give young people an opportunity to see that our courts are not simply institutions they read about in a textbook; they belong to the people of Michigan, including the next generation of citizens and leaders sitting in our classrooms today.”
The Court’s broader Court Community Connections (CCC) program takes Supreme Court oral arguments beyond the Hall of Justice and into communities across Michigan, giving students and members of the public an opportunity to see the state’s highest court at work and learn more about the judicial branch.
The next Court Community Connections program will take place on Wednesday, October 14, at Southeastern High School in Detroit, where the Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral argument and engage with students as part of the Court’s continuing statewide outreach efforts. Schools, educators, and community members interested in learning more about Court Community Connections and CCC+, including past programs and future opportunities, are encouraged to visit the Court Community Connections web page.
Schools interested in participating in CCC+ in spring of 2027 should contact the MSC Public Information Office (MSC_Public_Info@courts.mi.gov).
