Law firm sponsors Oakland Literacy Council’s 2026 Ex Libris event Oct. 21

The 37th annual Ex Libris fundraising dinner, “Ignite the Future,” will celebrate literacy and the accomplishments of Oakland Literacy Council’s students and volunteers. Proceeds support the Council’s work helping adults improve their reading, math, computer and English language skills.

Kemp Klein is an Epic Sponsor of this year’s event. For 32 years, the Kemp Klein Foundation has supported Oakland Literacy Council and its annual Ex Libris fundraising dinner, reflecting the firm’s belief in the importance of literacy to individuals and the community.

This year’s keynote speaker is Curtis Chin, a Detroit native, filmmaker, and bestselling author of “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant.” His memoir explores growing up in his family’s Detroit restaurant and was selected for the 2025–2026 Great Michigan Read. A University of Michigan graduate, Chin co-founded the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and served as its first executive director.

The 37th annual Ex Libris event takes place Wednesday, October 21, at The Village Club in Bloomfield Hills.

‘Modern Court Governance Course’ presented online

The National Center for State Courts will present a virtual “Modern Court Governance Course” October 27-28 and November 3-4 from noon to 4 p.m. each day.

This course provides court leaders with tools they can use to preserve and enhance governance mechanisms used by the court.

Court governance refers to the policies, procedures, and traditions that determine how courts are administered, how court administration decisions are made, and who has decision-making authority. Effective court governance is the foundation for ensuring that courts function in a predictable and consistent manner that supports fundamental principles, such as access to justice and due process of law.

A court governance structure should provide guidance to court managers and supervisors about how policies and practices are decided and implemented.

This course is designed for a wide range of court professionals, including individuals seeking CCE certification, court administrators, judges, clerks, managers, IT professionals, policy and decision-makers, court improvement teams, researchers, and analysts.

Cost for the online course is $495.  To register, visit www.ncsc.org and click on “Education &?events.”
