David C. Hollister
April 3, 1942 – September 22, 2026
Former Lansing Mayor and State Representative David C. Hollister died Sept. 22 at the age of age 84. He had battled Parkinson’s Disease since 2000.
A Kalamazoo native and alumnus of Michigan State University, Hollister taught government and history at Lansing Eastern High School, and served as Ingham County Commissioner, State Legislator, Lansing mayor, director of the Michigan
Department of Labor and Economic Growth, and as Prima Civitas Foundation president.
He led the regional effort that kept General Motors in mid-Michigan—and co-authored the book “Second Shift,” about the “Keep GM” effort, as well as many other articles and writings.
In the legislature, he sponsored many laws and programs regarding ethics in government, senior health, child care, seat belts, death with dignity, health and mental health, and more.
Hollister is survived by his wife of 34 years Christine; his sister Phyllis (PJ) Quimby, his sons Jerry (Kathy), Todd (Valorie), and Bob (Elise); and grandchildren McCall, Jonathan, Max, Kate, James, Judy and Erik.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Greater Lansing Food Bank and/or Hospice of Lansing Stoneleigh Residence are welcome.
