Plascore Inc. could break ground later this fall on a new 83,500-square-foot manufacturing facility on Zeeland’s east side.

The city’s Planning Commission voted 7-0 last Thursday to approve a site plan for the new building, which will be constructed in between two existing Plascore facilities on its campus at 500 E. Roosevelt Ave. The new project is expected to add at least 70 new jobs to the company’s current workforce of more than 500 employees, said Bethany Meza, Plascore’s facilities manager.

“Plascore has proudly called Zeeland home for over 50 years, and we’re very proud of the strong partnerships we’ve built with the city, the staff and the local community,” Meza said. “The … building would support the continued growth not only of Plascore, but the city of Zeeland as well, and promote our long-term commitment to advancing manufacturing here in Zeeland.”

Plascore manufactures honeycomb cores, honeycomb panels, composite structures, and cleanrooms for a variety of industries, from aerospace to commercial applications, according to the company website.

The new jobs that are expected to be created are in the areas of engineering, skilled trades and general manufacturing, Meza said.

“We’re excited about the opportunity this investment represents for both Plascore and the city of Zeeland, and we look forward to continuing that growth for years to come,” Meza said.

In addition to the new building, the project also will add 143 parking spaces to the site, boosting the total number of spaces on the Plascore campus to 278. It also adds significantly more greenspace and landscaping than required by city ordinance, Community Development Director Tim Maday wrote in a memo to the Planning Commission.

Commissioners included as conditions for site plan approval the submittal of required stormwater management plans to the city’s consulting engineering, as well as approval of final site utility and fire access plans.

Plascore is expected soon to ask for approval of an Act 198 industrial facilities tax abatement for the new facility, Interim City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer said.
