For the third consecutive year, the Veterans Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association (OCBA) raised a record amount of money at its annual golf outing for the benefit of Vets Returning Home, a Roseville-based nonprofit dedicated to providing aid and shelter to homeless veterans in the community.
“We had 88 golfers and 113 sponsors for the outing,” reported attorney Mike Schloff, who chaired the September 28 event at Paint Creek Country Club in Lake Orion. “We expect to net $50,000, an all-time high for us. It was a beautiful day – in all respects.”
Golfers of all skill levels navigated the rolling hills of the challenging 18-hole course, driven by a collective mission to “serve those who have served the nation,” according to Schloff, a past president of the OCBA who served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
“The solemn color guard with the posting of colors was an appropriate kickoff to a terrific event,” Schloff noted. “It was very gratifying to see the show of support from our sponsors and from all those who played in the outing.”
Program founder Sandy Bower echoed the comments, noting that funds from the outing “go a long way” in helping provide services to scores of homeless vets each year.
“We provide a stable and sober living environment to veterans in crisis,” Bower told outing participants at a dinner following the event. “The money that was raised will provide vital operational support to sustain our 43-bed facility, while helping with food and clothing costs, job placement services, and mental health counseling.”
Bower launched the program in 2013 when she purchased an 11,000-square-foot facility in Roseville that formerly housed a chapter of the American Red Cross.
“We do all that we do without government funding, as we rely on the generosity of businesses and individuals who want to help vets in need,” said Bower, who lived a homeless life as a teen mother before starting a successful credit card processing company. “We have housed and assisted more than 2,000 veterans since opening our doors in 2013. The goal of our organization is straightforward: to end chronic homelessness among veterans in our communities.”
To that end, the program is in a year-round fundraising mode, and welcomes donations through its Vets Returning Home website at vetsreturninghome.org or by calling (586) 285-5606.
“Donations help ensure that our veterans receive the dignity, stability, and resources they rightfully deserve,” Bower said.
As for the winners at the September 28 golf outing, the foursome of John Landis, Alan Rudzewicz, Brian O’Keefe, and Joe Owens posted a first-place score of 59, a 12-under tally on the par 71 layout.
