Across the country, Americans are already casting their ballots in the 2026 midterm elections, exercising a fundamental right that is central to our democracy.
Voting is both a right and a responsibility, and it is one worth celebrating. At polling places and kitchen tables, Americans are helping shape our nation's future. Every ballot represents someone taking part in the democratic process, and that participation deserves our respect and support.
The right to vote is one of the most important responsibilities of an American citizen. Voting gives people an opportunity to hold lawmakers and officials accountable and to make their voices heard.
The American Bar Association has been helping voters prepare through its Election Center, which offers nonpartisan information about voting options, election procedures, how elections are administered and how ballots are counted.
Recently, the election system has faced numerous allegations of fraud. Although virtually all have been discredited, those claims persist. This disinformation can cause harm by fostering mistrust and weakening confidence in the electoral process. It is incumbent upon lawyers to lead by example, to correct unfounded claims of fraud and to assure people that voting is safe and secure, that their votes count and that the results are fair.
Voters must have faith in the electoral process for our democracy to succeed, and lawyers must do their part to instill faith and confidence in our electoral system.
Our elections and our democracy rely on voters, election workers and everyone who makes the process possible. The ABA proudly supports and defends their work and encourages all to participate in this fundamental right.
