‘Alternatives to Policing’ focus of lecture Dec. 6

The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University law School will present “Alternatives to Policing” on Tuesday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wayne State University’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium and online via Zoom.

Panelists for the lecture include:

• Rashida Tlaib, U.S. Representative 

• Andrea Ritchie, author 

• Stephanie Chang, Michigan Senator

Lecture examines civil rights icon George Crockett Jr.

Wayne State University Law School will host a lecture on the book “No Equal Justice: The Legacy of Civil Rights Icon George W. Crockett Jr.” with co-author Peter Hammer on Friday, December 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium in Detroit.

George Crockett Jr. spent his life fighting racism and defending the constitutional rights of the oppressed. In the recently published book, “No Equal Justice,” Hammer explores Crockett’s life and legacy. 

Hammer was named the A. Alfred Taubman Endowed Chair at Wayne Law in fall 2018. He has taught at Wayne Law since 2003 and is the director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. 

The Keith Center is dedicated to promoting the educational, economic and political empowerment of under-represented communities in urban areas.

Polish American Legal Society hosts Holiday Open House

The Polish American Legal Society will host a Holiday Open House Thursday, December 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Polish Village Café, 2990 Yemens St. in Hamtramck.

The event is open to friends, family, and co-workers. Attendees do not need to be a PALS member. Tickets cost $20 and include traditional Polish food and a drink ticket.

The event will feature a charity basket raffle with proceeds going to the Genesis Soup Kitchen in Hamtramck. PALS is also supporting Toys for Tots so guests can also bring an unwrapped toy to donate.
