Counselor's Corner: Peace in the present moment

Fred Cavaiani

The elections are over. Thank God.  Some people are joyful. Some people are sad. The energy expressed by both candidates on television and radio and other social media was enormous. The negativity expressed by both candidates toward each other did not seem inspiring or  uplifting  to me. It is a relief not to be so bombarded by negativity anymore. It is only in the embrace and understanding of this present moment will I find peace. No one has to change for me to have internal peace.  But I must change by gently and lovingly embracing this moment and  refrain from investing in negative thinking and negative speaking.

In each moment of life, I am receiving wisdom and peace from God. This wisdom and peace come from a directed focus on what is important in life:  Love, compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and humility. We  live on this earth for a short time. We all have two things in common:  birth and death. But between our birth and death what is most  important to us?  What is most important for every person in life is to invest in being loving and positive and in humility and gratitude. I have no control in how other people will treat me. But I have control over how I will treat other people. When I invest in love and kindness toward everyone, I am investing in values that are eternal. When I invest in anger, resentment and criticism of others, I am investing in a prison of negativity that will block me from feeling the eternal values of love and peace.

History is filled with people who invest in negativity, anger, and resentment. History is also filled with people who were loving and kind. History is filled with people who blocked themselves from experiencing a loving God.  History is also filled with people who invested their heart and soul into experiencing a loving God.

In my life, I love to be around loving, kind, and positive people. Close to my apartment there is a restaurant within a short walking distance. I often eat there. It is called the Brunch Bar. The owner is so kind and caring toward everyone. The waitresses and waiters radiate the kind and loving presence of the owner. The restaurant is open each day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. People flock to this restaurant from many different places not simply because the food is so good, but because they are made to feel so welcome. To enter this restaurant is to feel like love is in the air.

Peace is the result of walking through life in a kind and gentle manner. Peace is based on gratitude and love. Peace comes to each of us when we gently embrace the present moment. The more loving I am toward others, the more peace I experience. The more I gently embrace this present moment, the more peace I will feel. To let go of how I want other people to be helps me to experience the peace and love of God. To focus on how to experience God in this present moment can be a most peaceful roadmap for living.

Peaceful and loving women and men over the centuries have helped their century tremendously because they kept life very simple and consistently were loving, grateful and humble. The energy of love and Kindness will always make my corner of the world a better place.

When I let go of resentments and criticism of others and of the world, I open my heart and mind to the love and wisdom of God. It almost sounds too simple but it works. Each present moment is all we have. But it is in this present moment that I will find the strength, power, and love of God. And in this experience, I will find peace and love. And this peaceful and loving presence to others will help both of us get a chance to experience love and peace. It  brings both of us into a positive experience of God.

What happens between birth and death does not have to be complicated. It is a simple journey into God because it is based on love. But I must become receptive to this present moment of life where peace will be discovered because the presence of God is here in this present moment.

In God and love, my soul becomes at rest. And I discover the peace of the present moment.
