Lawyer and activist to run
for Senate seat in Detroit

Detroit lawyer and activist Justin Onwenu launched his campaign for state Senate on Tuesday while saying he wants to clean up government and rebuild the local economy.

Onwenu, who also serves as Detroit’s director of entrepreneurship and economic opportunity, also announced more than two dozen endorsements from fellow Democrats for his campaign for the 1st Senate District.

“Michigan needs new and effective leaders ready to bring people together and deliver,” Onwenu said in a statement. “In the state Senate, I’ll work to unite Detroit and Downriver to help rebuild our economy, invest in our neighborhoods and clean up our government to work for all of us.”

Onwenu is an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. He also is an appointed member of the state Black Leadership Advisory Council. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rice University and his doctor of law from Columbia Law School.

He is the first candidate so far to announce his candidacy for the heavily Democratic 1st Senate District, which consists of part of Detroit along with Ecorse, River Rouge and Wyandotte. Onwenu is seeking to replace Sen. Erika Geiss, D-Taylor, who is term-limited.

Among the more than two dozen endorsements Onwenu announced as part of his campaign launch include former U.S. Rep. Andy Levin of Bloomfield Township, Rep. Tyrone Carter, D-Detroit, Rep. Helena Scott and D-Detroit, Rep. Joe Tate, D-Detroit.
