Keith Center to present Biennial Lecture Nov. 13
The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights will present its 2025 Biennial Lecture on Thursday, November 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wayne State University Law School’s Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer Ave. in Detroit.
The lecture will feature Dr. Lester Spence, professor of Political Science and Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University, speaking on the topic of “Cultivating Radical Imagination:?Rethinking the Role of Institution Power in Detroit and Beyond.” Spence will explore the topics of democracy and the importance of civic engagement in Detroit.

‘Trauma-Informed Care for Youth’ focus of MJI webinar Nov. 4
The Michigan Judicial Institute will present a webinar on “Beyond the Buzzword: Trauma-Informed Care for Youth (and Ourselves)” on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom.
The significance of trauma on youth and importance of trauma informed care (TIC) are commonly raised in discussions of practice, yet there is still confusion about what this really means in the context of juvenile justice. Expanding evidence from child development, immunology and neuroscience links the early experience of adversities with subsequent impacts on health, academic achievement, court involvement and mental illness.
Speaking at the webinar will be Dr. Heather Forkey, a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, and vice-chair of Pediatrics and Director of the Foster Children Evaluation Service of the UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center. She will discuss several key topics, including:
• How trauma impacts the developing brain, and how children can be impacted and protected.
• The variable response to adversity and the challenges of preventing and responding to the effects of trauma on children.
• The impact on those working in juvenile justice, including the consequences of secondary trauma and burnout.
The webinar’s intended audience includes juvenile probation officers, caseworkers, and staff providing ancillary services to court-involved youth.
