The Michigan Education Association on Wednesday endorsed Democratic Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald for attorney general.
The recommendation follows the associations’ screening interviews, which all candidates from both parties were invited to attend. The MEA’s endorsement is significant in Democratic politics. In 2018, the MEA endorsed now-Attorney General Dana Nessel over Pat Miles.
Chandra Madafferi, president and CEO of the association, said McDonald is a “steadfast friend of public education.”
“From her time in the classroom, to her work as a judge, to her current service as county prosecutor, her words and her deeds reflect her dedication to the success of our students,” Madafferi said in a statement. “She will make the safety of our students, their families and the educators who serve them her top priority.”
Madafferi also championed McDonald’s support for collective bargaining, saying she would stand with educators by “enforcing labor laws, pushing back against attacks on worker protections, and ensuring Michigan remains a state where hard work is honored and workers are treated with dignity and respect.”
McDonald said in a statement that as a former teacher, she was grateful to receive the support.
“As a former union member, I know how critical it is that we have a leader willing to enforce our labor laws, fight against unfair attacks on workers and make sure Michigan is a state where workers are always treated with respect in the workplace.”
Former U.S. Attorney Mark Totten and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savitt are also seeking the Democratic nomination for attorney general.
The Michigan Democratic Party will hold its early endorsement convention on April 19, 2026.
