Gilman Award
The Eastern District of Michigan Bar Association hosted the 2026 Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon on April 15, at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. This year’s Gilman Award was presented to Michael Evan Carter (center), the chief defender and executive director of the Federal Community Defender Office for the Eastern District of Michigan (FCDO) which provides representation to individuals charged with federal criminal offenses, including both felonies and misdemeanors. Happy to congratulate Carter at the luncheon were (l-r) U.S. District Court Judges Paul D. Borman, Brandy R. McMillion, Terrence G. Berg, and Gershwin A. Drain; Brandy Robinson of FCDO; and U.S. District Court Chief Judge Stephen J. Murphy III. The Leonard R. Gilman Award is given annually to an outstanding practitioner of criminal law who exemplifies the excellence, professionalism, and commitment to public service of Len Gilman who was U.S. attorney at the time of his death in 1985. Carter serves on the boards of the ACLU of Michigan, the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, the National Association of Federal Defenders, and the Eastern District of Michigan Bar Association. He is also a faculty member at the National Criminal Defense College and a Fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers.
